UWO Special Year

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have a couple of questions and was wondering if anyone would be able to help. I'm thinking about applying to UWO and Queens for med school but would like to bring up my GPA. I have done progressively well in my engineering undergrad (4th yeah GPA of 3.7 and lower in other 3 years and cGPA of around 3) but to be more competitive I'm thinking of doing a special year in life sciences.

1. Has anyone enrolled into a special year after being in the workforce for years? Is the special year just a bunch of courses that meet the required credit hours? How do i go about enrolling into a special year? I presume I do not need to enroll into a second degree program?

2. I have been working in engineering for the last 8 years (31 now), I presume this much time away from school should not be a problem.

Thanks!

The time off won't matter - the rules though about special year have to be very carefully followed - you cannot have any first year courses in that year or any 2nd year courses that do not have a first year prereq. That kind of makes it hard to jump ship to a completely different field. I would always recommend conferring with the office about any special years you do - you do not want to miss up and waste the year.

Most schools will let you do post graduate work under something like continuing education. Not too hard to get started up with that :)

Good luck!

Hi, Thanks for the information. You are right, the conditions for this special year are a bit tricky. I have messaged UWO with few questions but have not heard anything back yet.

Anyone in a similar situation - thinking of undertaking a special year? I have been looking at Athabasca university since that will let me keep my current job.

Would appreciate more information or a reply from someone who's attended Athabasca or someone who's done a special year.

Thanks!
