What are the odds of getting accepted to Dalhousie as in province vs elsewhere?

Thanks for the download! I'm also planning to apply to DalNB med school (graduating in May). Just a bit confused about one point in that download. It says

"If you have completed your degree your best 3 out of 4 years (we ask applicants to tell us which two years to assess your GPA)"

Is there a typo or do they actually look at two years within your best 3 to assess your gpa?

Again thanks for your help and sage advice, know that you are an invaluable resources to us undergrads and pre-med hopefuls. Thank you!

Is it worth it to write the MCAT this summer (and subsequently apply to DalNB either for this coming year or the following year) with a consecutive 2 year of 3.7 and fairly good ec's? (Publishing a Bio paper, volunteering mostly non-hospital based with a couple months of volunteer, worked in hosp for a year, frequent karate competitions (couple first place), went to shad valley).

I'm a NB resident also.

I would say it wouldn't hurt. At worst, you get experience both with writing the mcat and with the application process. At best, you get accepted. It sucks not getting in, but the experience can help you better your application. Also, I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I have heard that generally the applicant pool for nb is slightly easier then for ns.

Edit: if you are from nb I would highly recommend applying to memoral as well. They have spots set aside for students from nb.

You should apply to MUN as well, they do not post any sort of stats breakdown so it is hard to speculate but it is definitely a more holistic approach. Dal is very EC heavy and I did not realize just how much until I was rejected:cool: haha I would try to fill up as much as you can within those supplemental sections, they do prefer quality (long term) over quantity though. I only had part-time research for 2 years, mentoring and tutoring for 1 year when I applied and St. John ambulance for less than a year. I just couldn't do anything earlier because of my kids. It sounds like you already have some stuff so that is good, just make sure you keep with some stuff and are "well rounded". The application process has been the longest part of my undergrad (so it feels), best of luck!!:D

and Congrats! on the upcoming graduation.

Also try to give yourself time for an MCAT re-write, it is very content dependent and you could get a test that you would Ace or get one that is all your weaknesses. Be sure to keep on top of the MCAT deadlines for the schools you apply to, Dal is earlier than others I believe, I have heard of many people planning to write or having written past the deadline and the schools won't budge, means a wasted app year.

Thanks for the advice/motivation guys. I've heard that too Cherbear (re easier to get in as nb resident). Any luck on your end?

I see that according to Princeton review the MCAT is changing (50% more questions and time to write, more emphasis on biochemistry)...but It looks like it wont be for another couple years. Thanks silvantes for letting me know about those nb seats at Mun!! Never mentioned it to us at med school presentations oddly.

Current plan if i don't get in is to take a TESOL course and teach English in South korea for a year (which I've thought about for a year too in case i get rejected). Would volunteer experience at a hospital over there while working still look good? (I know they like long term stuff one one place generally).

Hey,

Teaching English in South Korea is a great plan, I thought about it if I don't get accepted this year. Two things to consider about that:

1. How are you going to travel back and forth from South Korea in order to be at the schools for your interviews? I am not 100% on the logistics of it, and there might be an "exceptional circumstance" clause, but I think you need to be on campus for the interview.

2. South Korea might be on the verge of going back to war. Do you want to live in a country that is being directly attacked by North Korea? Just last night hackers from NK shut down banks, tv stations, and the like for hours in SK. Keeping yourself alive is priority #1. (I think)

All the best.

Yeah, If I go through with the Korea plan, then I'd delay my applications and such til the following year. Get the teaching and volunteer work over there done and then come back.

As for the war part of it, I've talked to the south korean education board, and my Korean friends and they say if I teach in Busan or below I should be quite safe. Yea that hacking thing really did happen. The US already sent the USS George Washington and South Korea and Japan are tag teaming with their defense systems (which all makes me feel slightly better). I'm still thinking about it all, definitely haven't made a final call yet.

the North Koreans have been threatening the south every since the mid-1990's ... claiming they would drown the south in a sea of fire blah blah blah, so its probs an empty threat especially since China would have alot to lose if the north start attacking countries that are in the UN.

The hacking was from a Chinese IP. Not sure if it was by the North or the Chinese. have fun teaching brah.
