fonky
Hi all, I have a question regarding the mcgill pre requisites. I already have a bachelor's degree (graduated 2008 from engineering), and my cegep pre-requisites courses date from about 12 years ago. On the mcgill site, it says I can take these courses on a part-time basis, as long as they're university level. Does anyone know if any university offers such courses on a part-time, summer course basis or evening classes? Would cegep courses be equivalent ? I was not able to find a university that gives such courses... Here is what it says on their website : Thanks all in Biology: a minimum six (6) semester hours of introductory coursework, with labs; in Chemistry: a minimum six (6) semester hours of general (or physical) chemistry coursework, with labs, a minimum three (3) semester hours of organic chemistry coursework, with labs; in Physics: a minimum six (6) semester hours of introductory coursework, with labs; where: minimum credits do not include compulsory laboratory or practical work; grades of "Pass/Fail" (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) or of similar schema are not acceptable in coursework; numerical or letter-class grades are required. Academic performance within these course will be considered; courses completed more than eight (8) years before the application deadline will not be considered; distance or correspondence education courses will not be considered except by special permission at discretion of the Admissions Office; Special Notes: Though not required, university-level courses in biochemistry, cell and/or molecular biology and statistics are recommended. If you have already completed a bachelor's degree, then Summer session, evening session or other alternate sessions may be accepted if the course is university-level and is credited or can count toward the required semester-hours in the given subject. Summer or other interim session courses are discouraged when the purpose is to reduce the credit load in regular sessions. For this remaining admissions cycle (for Fall 2013 entry) you can still apply with some of the pre-requisites completed, provided that at the time of application, the Admissions Office can visibly ascertain that you have completed or have a viable plan to have all prerequisite credits completed by the July 31, 2013. AngelDoc
You can take the prereqs at Concordia University. I did this and they have very convenient schedules for taking the classes if you cannot attend classes during the day (i.e evening classes, one time a week etc.). Depending on your work experience, McGill admissions may wave your need to refresh the courses that have expired (i.e older than 8 years). Hope this helps! AngelDoc
No problem! I forgot to mention that I took the courses at Concordia as an independent student since I already had a bachelor's degree and did not want to apply into a particular program, only particular courses. fonky
Hey thanks for your answers. If I understand correctly it seems like a heavy load, it would take almost a year full time if have to do 6 credits biology + 9 credits chemistry + 6 credits physics it is 21 credits of university courses... Am I mistaken ? I tought it was only the equivalent of cegep courses that was required. In their examples, they say that it takes biol 201 + biol 225 + biol 227, which amounts to 9 credits, but they say that the minimum is 6.... It is kind of confusing... Thanks again ! medschool2012
You need 6 credits in biology, (including 2 lab components) Biol 201 has a lab. Biol 226 and 225 do not have a lab, hence you must attach Biol 227 (a basic easy lab 3 credit course also), so all in all you will need 3 semesters to complete your biology credits, you can start with biol 201 in the summer as it is given over the summer, and maybe a physics class also to start with. Don't forget, chemistry classes will take 3 semesters in a row, as it is a sequence, and you always need the previous class to do the next one. Btw, consider that starting next year, McGill will require prereqs to be completed before you apply.
fonky
thanks very much for the answers guys. I guess I'll have to do these full time if don;t want to spend too much time just for the prereqs. Peace
