nawrp11
Hi there, I hope I haven't scared away too many people with the thread title haha, it was the only thing I could think of in less than 30 seconds. I am specifically posting this in the UBC section because it would be nice to get feedback from med school students currently at UBC. Here's my question: I am just like sooo many undergrad "pre-med" students in Canada; sure getting into a med school in the first place would be absolutely amazing, but there's always that thought in the back of my head that asks me "Wouldnt it be nice to get accepted to UBC? One of if not the best Med school in Canada?" The other incentive of UBC is that, well, its UBC! For me to be able to go to school and live in British Columbia I think would be incredible. Now, of course actually getting into UBC is incredibly difficult, and I can see that the odds are against me. But I think that if I really put my mind to it (like REALLY...put my mind into it), I might have a decent shot. But anyways, my question is this: for those who are in Medical school currently, maybe even at UBC, does it make sense for a person to want to go to med school in a different city obviously for the reputation of the school, but also because of its location? After all, this is medical school; its not like I would have half of the day off 5 days a week like in undergrad to explore the city I would be in. Basically, would I be expecting to just be busy for so much of the time that I wouldnt even really "live" in the city I would be in? I hope my question makes sense

nawrp11
To dumb it down for you: when in med school would a student have enough free time to enjoy the city they live in, or would they be caught up with too much work?

It's great that you have a goal in mind and know exactly what you want to do. That's always the first step Believe it or not, there is actually a lot of free time in the first two years of med school (pre-clerkship years). I'd even argue that there is less stress because you're already in and there are no grades (it's only Pass or Fail). Don't get me wrong though, there are times where you will be really stressed out such as finals but I would definitely say pick a school where you see yourself spending the next four years in. You're going to meet some amazing friends and develop close relationships with them, so its always awesome having a city that gives you options to hang out, have fun, and let loose! It's actually very important to keep a balanced life while in med school and for me Vancouver lets me do a lot of the things I love. If you love the city life, this is a great place to be (minus the rain...)
nawrp11
Wow, thanks for the great responses guys! Yeah, I would love to go to a medical school like UBC, but im scared that in the middle of med school I will realize that the entire time I didnt even do the things that attracted me to UBC, and instead only had time to study (might as well just go to the Med School in my city)

youngdad
First two years of med school were easier than my undergrad. So much time off. I studied 1-2 hours per night on most week nights and never on the weekends. That was largely just staying organized, printing off notes, planning my next day etc. Tests were definitely harder than my undergrad. When you are used to getting high 90's and you are writing a test getting low 80's it feels like you are failing. Its really weird. Bottom line. Med school is the life. You will have lots of time to do stuff outside of medicine. Until 3rd year...But that will be the same regardless of where you study so go ahead and let location be a part of why you apply to a school. Larrivee
No, this is the same argument that you are becoming a doctor because you want money. Meds is very busy, you won't have a ton of time to explore the city. You're not a medical student, Gunner, yet you reply as if you are intimately familiar with what it is like to be in medical school. The fact is that you will have LOTS of time that you can explore the city AND still get rockin' grades if you spend your time wisely(well, get high % on exams, which = pass ). I do something different every weekend it seems, and there are lots of clubs that do activities together all over vancouver (cycling, hiking, skiing, yoga, sparta exercise, etc etc). optimism101
I traveled as an undergrad, and I paid for it myself because I worked part time. Everyone does things differently, I just think it's an odd thing generalize that most premeds don't travel at all. Almost all the premeds I know, or friends who have been accepted, managed to do a bit of travelling as an undergrad.
