futurepediatric
Hey guys! I'm just about to drop a 6 credit course because I'm doing pretty bad and it would really destroy my GPA. I will be 3 credits short (I had credits worth 6 courses last semester, so I only need 3 now for FCL). However, I'm not sure how to make up for it. I'm in second year and would really like to have FCL every year, especially since I'm only a half course away. Does anyone know of any options I have to maintain my full course load for this year at this point? I thought of taking an online course that I need to take anyways, but I just figured that I would have to register by the 10th of this month to start next month. So technically as of now, the earliest I could start is beginning of April, which I don't think would count as part of the fall/winter semester (does anyone know?) Thanks in advance guys! I see some views, but no replies lol On the face of it that online course is probably the only way to go(?) What school are you at? Just because the course goes live on the 10th of March likely wouldn't mean you couldn't start earlier unofficially. What course were you thinking of maybe taking? Ooh i think i worded it incorrectly. In order to start a course in the next month i would have had to apply by the 10th of the current month which i unfortunately missed by iust a couple of days. So now my only option would be to start in april by signing up by the 10h of march, which i dont think would count as a F/W course ): I also saw somewhere on this forum that some unis have courses that start midway thru the semester and are a bit more compressed, though i dont know if its offered at my schoool I go to york and i was planning on taking orgo online, however apparently they do not publish end dates (only when the course began) so i guess whether i finish it by the end of the semester is not an issue

I mean it is still something to explore. I more than once finished easy and yet required DE elective course including all assignments in 3-4 straight days working rather hard and pulled out a grades above 90. Actually that was one of my strategies - get DE materials early, finish the entire course prior to the start of the semester and then free up time during the term. If you exams end early enough at york and you have a gap before May it might still be possible. Not something like orgo though - you would looking for pretty much the easiest useful course you could find. If you are persistent you almost certainly can still get key course materials early as well.

I know orgo would take a long time but would it really matter considering it will not show when the course ends on the transcript? (i.e. if i end in may and start in april) b/c if i take a super easy course that i was not planning on taking i will have to pay a lot of money for a filler course Also, do you know if it would count as a F/W course even if it began all the y in April? Thanks a lot for your responses

Thanks a lot for your responses That depends - I have heard for some schools it is when the course ends that matters as well. You have to check (carefully) with schools you are interested in. Most places are I know of are interested in the standard academic term (sept 1 - april 30) - minor shifts might be allowed. It would suck to pay for a course you don't need I know - sometimes that is just the price you have to pay for the entire year to count - so much gets damaged when you shift to non full time status. Other than this course how are you doing for the year?
jojoluvsu2
Contact York, see what it would take to encorporate that course as part of your York transcript (as a transfer credit). If you're thinking of doing the course through Athabasca (that's what it sounds like from your description) a course started in April will technically be under their spring semester. However, maybe if York would accept it as a transfer credit they might put it under your Winter semester courses and you'll just have the mark to report on the Athabasca transcripts when you apply to schools. I would also suggest maybe just taking an easy course that you could finish quickly (if my idea works I'm sure York will require the course to be completed by the end of April which is exam crunch time, not the time to be trying to complete an orgo course!). If you still want to do orgo online do that at another time.

Other than this course how are you doing for the year? Yeah, it's definitely worth it for me I think. I am doing well but not amazing (nothing below A but no A+'s so far I don't think). However, I just checked and thankfully, now that I dropped that course, my exams end April 4. So I almost have a whole month for the online course

B/c 'm just worried about having a full course load status for now... unless I'm missing something. My exams end early (I just mentioned above) so I have almost a whole month to work on a single course I am still definitely willing to take an easy course I may not need if that i the better option though! jojoluvsu2
I don't think it would specifically matter to OMSAS about having a few courses from one school and one from another to make up a full time semester. My concern would be if they would count that single course as part of the winter semester given that it will say spring semester on the Athabasca transcript (it says that for courses starting in March as well). If you had 3 from York starting January and 2 Athabasca starting January I think you wouldn't have a problem but because one is starting in April it might look different. If you could include it in your York transcript under the winter semester that might make a difference. Those were just my rambling thoughts
futurepediatric
Incase anyone was wondering what happens if they found themselves in a similar situation regarding dropping a course and having full course load, I emailed schools about how they would look at an online course being taken if it started April for ex. (late in the semester). The reply I got was if you can prove you finished it by April 30th, then it is permitted to count towards your F/W semester. Does anyone know how this can be proven with an Athabasca course?? I'm having trouble thinking how I can possibly prove it if they do not provide end dates to the course. Usually you can get the school to provide statement of when you took the final exam (which is usually considered the end of the course).

Thanks rmorelan! I was thinking that but I don't know if it would work the same for Athabasca since you can redo exams ... but I will ask them and see
