Athabasca for pre-req physics

Recommended Posts

asking for a friend:

has anyone had experience taking distance pre-req courses from Athabasca to fulfill a UofA med application requirement?

Athabasca has 3 entry level physics courses (200, 201, 202) and say that any 2 of those fulfills a 1 year, 6 credit requirement at other institutions.

I want to see if anyone has done this before asking UofA directly.

Thanks,

-Mike

Although I can't speak about Athabasca directly, maybe someone else can, my friend's med application was rejected about a month ago because a few of his courses from Concordia didn't transfer to the U of A leaving him with less than a full course load. You have to be really careful when taking courses and make sure that they transfer to other schools. The transfer agreements can be found here http://alis.alberta.ca/ps/ep/aas/ta/admissions.html. If the universities have agreed that they are equivalent then they should suffice as prereqs. Hope that helps.

I'm currently taking PHYS 202 to satisfy 3 credits of my physics requirement. I contacted the office and they said that was fine.

Not to hijack the thread, but it anyone has information on filling the chemistry/organic chemistry prereqs through Athabasca I'd also be very interested to know. Specifically, I've taken intro chemistry, and intro organic chemistry, but would need another course in each to apply. Thanks!

You can always check the Alberta Transfer Guide to see what courses with transfer nicely! http://www.acat.gov.ab.ca/alberta_transfer_guide_download/2009_2010_ATG.htm

  • 3 weeks later...

On this theme, does anyone know if I can apply next cycle as a graduating fourth year if I am not going to complete PHYS126 until the Winter semester? Will the application accept tentative completion of a prereq? I would assume yes, but don't want to "count my chickens"

NewfieMike, I had looked at the AthabascaU phys courses, but I found I was way too undisciplined to get through them. :) Kudos to your friend for the motivation!

I would double check even after looking at the Alberta transfer guide. I say this because I have I.B. Biology which is equivalent to BIOL 207 at U of A and looking at the Alberta transfer guide, their transfers show any Athabasca biology course counting as BIOL xxx (since I need one more biology). I called U of A once and they said I could take any of the biology courses but I wanted to be sure so I emailed them and they changed their answer by saying if they looked into the biology course I was taking and it was too similar to Biol 207 (which is what I had credit for from I.B.) then it would not count. They changed there answer 3-4 times before I had something in writing saying that the courses I was registering for would fulfill the pre-reqs. I am also taking CHEM 360 with athabasca (OCHEM level 2). Not finished either of them but they don't seem to be too bad. Ochem labs are brutal because they are 4 days straight! I made the mistake of procrastinating so now I have to finish the assignments, labs, midterms and finals in the next 1.5 months. But if you don't procrastinate, they seem do-able.

Hope that helps!

Hi, I'm new to this forum, so I hope I'm posting this correctly. I'm also thinking about taking Athabasca's physics 200 and either 201 or 202. As you are presently taking PHYS 202, I assume you probably also took the first 200 course. How are you finding these classes? Thanks.

Beware the phys202 final exam - don't get too busy and not do practice questions like me! It is harder than anticipated.

First, thanks for all of your great support and advice to others. It's been great reading. Also wanted to ask you your opinion on Athabasca's Physics 200 and 201/202 courses. How long ago did you take them, and any preference for 201 vs. 202? Thanks.

Whoa. I was taking T/R with Al Meldrum, and I'm sure the average was far higher than that. At any rate, it was just a repeat of H/S physics, which was almost 10 years ago for me... Not trying to troll, I just found it far easier to get a high grade than biochem or organic. And Meldrum's notes/quizzes are the bomb.

Your guys' class average was around ~55% so not that much higher. My friends hated Meldrum's notes. Lol.

But yes, if effort is put in, the curve definitely favors you. I ended up getting an A-, but I have no idea how. I did so bad (by my standards) on the second midterm and final. :o
