AlphaGoose
Background So I'm in second year with one outstanding year (so far) and one bad year (1st year-3.45gpa) under my belt. Clearly my concerns are on the later. I'm very happy with where I am now with my ECs and peripherals but that first year just feels like a curse laying over my head. Truth be told it's more around 3.6-3.7 without 3 or so really bad courses. However, I have a lot of faith in the aGPA calculations to keep me competitive enough. My question is, once you are invited to interviews, how important is one's GPA in determining an offer or not? I have this idea that GPA and MCAT scores take you to the interview and your interview takes you to an offer. Am I right in my line of thinking? I'm just concerned that even if my GPA is good enough for interview offers, it can still be what holds me back from an offer even after a good enough interview. This is all just hypothetical, but if anyone can help me calm my worries (or lay down the cold hard truth), I'd really appreciate it.
TheBoss
Different schools put different weighting on GPA after interviews, but if you can get an interview, you have a definite shot at getting in if you ace it, even at the schools that weigh interviews the least. Stories abound of people getting offers of admission barely having the stats needed for an interview invite.
Savac
Yes, generally GPA counts for 33%, MCAT 33%, interview 33% or some variation around those numbers where interview can take up to 50%. It changes from school to school so I cannot tell you more than that. The interview can definitely be more than 50%. For example, at McMaster it is 15% GPA, 15% VR, 70% Interview. At Queen's, it used to be 100% Interview (not sure if it still is)
Intrepid86
Everyone who gets an interview is similarly strong academically, so the interview is usually the difference maker. However, if people do comparably well on interviews, then grades and standardized test scores stratify the rest of the field. This is also true for dental school. souljaboy
Yeah so we start with grades for cutoffs for interviews. If interviews are equally good for 2 applicants they look back at grades/ECs your application pretty much to determine which person to take in the hypothetical situation where both of you are say the very last person before the waitlist. I don't think any schools look at your ECs after the interview to rank people since that's a subjective thing. It's usually just GPA and/or MCAT.
