Studying for Verbal: Early strategies

Hey ya'll,

I want to start studying for verbal as soon as possible since it is arguably the most important section on the MCAT and it is probably my weakest. I don't want to use the pool of available passages too quickly, but are there any good preliminary study materials to at least start thinking in the right mentality? Maybe some online links or good starting books (I wouldn't want to start the EK 101 Passages just yet; save that for the hardcore studying).

I've started reading stuff like The Economist and books (lol :P ), but I don't know if I'm able to critically analyze the info as is needed for the verbal reasoning section.

What have you guys used to start Verbal training off on the right foot?

Thanks for all the insight!

Hey Dr. P!

You may not be as bad at verbal as you think, and you may not have to invest that much time into studying for it. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about exhausting my practice material - do a few practice tests to really see where you stand. I did AAMC 3 VR a full year before MCAT studying haha (although this was silly and I don't necessarily recommend it.. it can't hurt though). Bar that, if you don't do well, yeah I'd just (a) continue reading hard-ish articles and (B) start with EK Verbal 101. For me, the hardest part about verbal was interpreting the questions, not the passages, so I think really doing MCAT passages + questions (and not necessarily reading) is probably your best bet, but if you really don't tend to read articles on your own, I guess reading some would be helpful too :).

Best of luck!
