Jamone
This blog post was from last year's application cycle: http://admissionsblog.med.ubc.ca/2011/12/23/clarification-of-site-selection/ and says "How site placement works is like this: When we (the Admissions Office) moves through the list of applicants and comes to your name, we look at your first site of preference, if it is full, we put you at your second site of preference, if that is full, third, etc. If you are placed at any site other than your first preference, you will be wait-listed for your preferred site(s). If we cannot place you, and you have been deemed admissible, you will be wait-listed." I was wondering if anyone knew 1. if this applies to this year as well 2. if, as I understand it, this means that ranking less preferred sites will not affect your chances at being placed at a more preferred site 3. if anyone knows someone who was placed at (got off the waitlist for) a more preferred site after initially being placed at a less preferred site. DaKirbster
Yes, this is still how it works. Your site ranking does not affect your chances of getting accepted. I myself haven't heard of someone going to a preferred site after being placed at a different site, but I don't know many med students and I am sure that it does happen from time to time. UBC goes into more detail in their site selection presentation when you get an interview.

Thanks, and oh yeah I know they said it doesn't affect your chances of getting accepted, but I meant your chances at getting your preferred site i.e. if you ranked IMP above SMP, for instance, accepting an offer for SMP won't have any effect on your chances for getting an offer for IMP eventually. That is correct. According to the site selection information session, both acceptances and waitlists are done based on your TFR score rank. eg. If you're ranked number 200, and you accept at SMP, the waitlist to get into IMP is based solely upon your rank score. If applicant #201, 202, and 203 only listed IMP as options, the next available seat at IMP will be offered to you, and your spot at SMP will be offered to the next applicant with SMP as an option.
