JP76
Hey guys, just wondering if my GPA / Average would be competitive for western and-or UofT in the event that I applied to dentistry. Took a full year of classes each year. Year 1 = 3.45 (80.1% average) Year 2 = 3.81 (85.8% average) Year 3 = 3.92 (88.6% average) Year 4 = 3.86 (86.0% average) Thanks. Yup you're good for both. western only considers top 2 years and uoft will drop ur worst academic yr (first yr in your case)
shosh28
So Western takes your top two years and UofT will drop your lowest year since you took four years of undergrad, which will leave you with a pretty competitive GPA! But your DAT scores are also taken into consideration - have you taken them yet? Good luck!
JP76
I have yet to take the DAT. Took the MCAT with minimal studying and scored a decent 10-10-11-R. I feel relatively confident that if I studied reasonably hard for the DAT I could do very well on it. You're sure my marks are adequate for UofT and Western Dentistry? They wouldn't hinder my chances of getting in assuming i did very well on the DAT?
Stars125
Hey guys, just wondering if my GPA / Average would be competitive for western and-or UofT in the event that I applied to dentistry. Took a full year of classes each year. Year 1 = 3.45 (80.1% average) Year 2 = 3.81 (85.8% average) Year 3 = 3.92 (88.6% average) Year 4 = 3.86 (86.0% average) Thanks. Your wGPA for UT is 3.86 (lowest year dropped) and your best 2 year average for UWO dentistry is 87.3% As you may know, marks are worth 60% for these schools, so as long as you don't bomb the DAT you should be good. For UWO, you also have to make sure that in each year after year 1 (yr 2,3,4), you took all courses that were GREATER than 200 level, else, that year won't count in your best two year average. Last year the best two year average of UWO matriculants was ~88.4%....the year before that....it was ~89.3%....these are off the top of my head....for UT...unless you are a grad student, I think your wGPA may be on the low end. Regardless, if your best 2 year average for UWO is in fact 87.3 (the 2 years meet the requirement) and you meet the cut-offs, you should get interview! P.S. - Unless you are a grad student, your GPA, in my opinion, WILL hinder you at UT....not at UWO though!
rommel
the BEST 2 years CAN have 2 level 1 courses they stipulate that no more than 1 full course of level 1 so 8/10 should be level 2 and up
Coolio
I think you both are close but not quiet right. "Upper years (beyond year 2) should consist of a full course load with 4 of 5 courses equivalent to 200 level or higher" As far as I know, doesn't indicate anything about what the best two years should contain. Theoretically speaking, one of your best two years could even be first year which would be all first year courses. In order for your years 3 and 4 to be considered as best, you would need to make sure it meets the above requirement.
Stars125
MY EMAIL "In 1st year, I had an average of 95.2%, taking all 1st year courses. In 2nd year I had an average of 89.3%, taking all 2000 level courses. In 3rd year, I had an average of 91.3%, however, took 2.0/5.0 1000 level courses (degree requirement) and 3.0/5.0 3000 level courses. What would constitute my BEST 2 years?" RESPONSE FROM TRISH "It is suggested that applicants take a minimum of one first year course in upper years of one's undergraduate degree program in order to minimize the chances of taking repeated years. Repeated years are those which have course loads with courses of similar level of difficulty and covering similar course content as a course load previously taken. In our admissions process, a repeated year is a continuation of the original year, and therefore the averages attained in the original and repeated year(s) are averaged together and treated as if coming from a single year. According to what you state were your course loads for your first three years of undergraduate education, you have 3 unique years, so we would take the highest two averages into our admissions process." So...will they take my 1st and 2nd year....or 1st and 3rd year....I'm still not sure....
rommel
Just to clarify when I said 8/10 courses I think that is the same as 4/5...I was doing it as 1 course = semester length and I think yours is full year.... but pretty much I believe you can only have 1 1st year course per semester for the "upper years". I'm not competing to see who said the better answer, I want to make sure I am clear on this as well. With regards to your question ... that year 3 is no good for application and they would use your final year since it must be used I am pretty sure (correct that if it is wrong) and your first year. But I am reading your response from trish and that seems to totally contradict everything so I am lost now. I guess at worst case they will average year 3 and 1 but maybe 2/5 is "different" enough to be uniquely considered.
Stars125
Yup...her response contradicts the website. But I believe they may have the requirement to avoid "repeated years", w.e. that means...according to her....my 3rd year is not a "repeated" year.....so it will count....worst case...they take yr 1 and 2....best case....they take yr 1 and 3....I couldn't be more explicit in my question....but her response couldn't be more vague! lol! BTW, your initial response was good!
