oops_letstryagain
Hi, Does anyone have a suggestion for a good clinical skills book? I'm currently using the small blue "Essentials of Clinical Examination Handbook" from U of T, but I feel like I need something with better links between symptoms and pathophys and more comprehensive info. I realized recently this book is more useful once I've mastered the basics and am reviewing. What has everyone found that is useful?

ellorie
Some of our preceptors don't really love Bates - we've been recommended to use Talley & O'Connor, especially for the cardio stuff
rmorelan
Some of our preceptors don't really love Bates - we've been recommended to use Talley & O'Connor, especially for the cardio stuff Now that is a good book - bates just isn't organized to pick up solid basics quickly. A lot of the residents use that one to prepare for the licensing exam.
cheech10
Talley and O'Connor have another book, Examination Medicine, which is geared toward more advanced trainees preparing for licensing exams. It was quite helpful for my IM Royal College exam, for instance.
Lactic Folly
I used Clinical Examination by Epstein, and liked it.
medaholic
Evidence Based Physical Diagnosis by Steven McGee Probably not as good for learning how to do exam, but really helps with knowing which tests are better and which tests you can trust. More for helping with interpreting physical findings than with learning how to do the tests.
oops_letstryagain
Thanks for the advice everyone. I ordered both the McGee book and the Talley book and will post with my thoughts when I have a chance to read through them a bit.
Cerena
To learn how to do the exams, watch bates videos on YouTube. To learn how to interpret the results of such physical examination, read talley and oconnor. This is exactly what I need! Hard to know how to interpret when you're just starting out.
