Dentbeautiful
Hello guys, I was wondering if anyone has taken Biochem 310 @ the university of Alberta in the spring? I need to take this course as it is a prerequisite for most dental schools, I am an okay student with a GPA above a 3.80; however a lot of very intelligent students I know, have taken this course and did extremely bad, even during the fall/winter. So what do you guys suggest I do?
alberta187
At least I know for u of a, your mark in a spring course wouldn't be taken into your GPA calculation. I would check with wherever you're applying to see if GPA from spring/summer classes would count towards the overall GPA calculation. If it does count, then it really doesn't matter when you take it. Because of the volume of course material (it's really a lot!), if the grade counts in spring or fall, i would recommend taking it in fall, more time to handle the workload that way. But then again everyone studies differently, I'm just speaking from my point of view.
Dentbeautiful
So, I have been told. If you do not mind, can you share the grade you achieved in that course and when you took the course. So far it has been nothing but horror stories. Most universities do not count your spring/summer course if they are under 12 credits. Not a big fan of spring course though did an organic chem course in three weeks and although I recieved a decent grade I wouldn't recommend it. alberta187
I scored an A in the course in fall 2012, but that was with paranoid weekly studying because I heard some horror stories too lol. The questions really test your understanding so be able to apply the material, but honestly if you pay close attention in class, it's not bad at all, and she does drop subtle test hints. Also I would recommend brushing up on your 200 stuff, that would save a lot of time in trying to understand the 310 material.
Dentbeautiful
That is very impressive, my friend is a biochem major and my Chem 263 TA both were not able to achieve your grade. Not to say that the grade is the most important aspect but it is really nice to hear that I have a chance of getting an A thank you very much ! schatzli
I think as long as you are aware how difficult the course is and are prepared to put in time into reviewing regularly and studying, you will be fine. I was able to get an A in that course too, but also routinely studied. It might be better to do it in spring as you can focus completely on just that course.. Just as a heads up, if you are planning on applying to U of M, Bioch 200 and 310 do not meet their biochem requirements, but are okay for most other schools. If you are referring to University of Manitoba, what I did that they considered transferrable was submitted my course outline for Bioch 200, 320 and also Cell bio 200 for review. They said that the combination of these courses met their requirements.
Dentbeautiful
Really , what are the biochem requirements for U of M. Dentbeautiful
That sounds pretty doable, is that the only way to meet their requirements ! bigboy13
Hey guys, Do you think it would be a bad idea to do both BIOCH 310 and 330 at UofA at the same time in the spring semester if these are the only two courses I would be taking? I have heard that they are really demanding courses but would it be doable? It would be great if anyone who has ever done two 300 level biochems at the same time could comment as well. Thanks!
