rmorelan
In general do schulich med students only meet, interact and have classes with those in their own med year/grad class? How about contact with non-med students at western? My take - we only have classes with our own years but we do interact with the other classes socially a lot and through the million clubs etc at the school. With a 171 people in the class, 650ish total and similar schedules there is a lot of med school focus to overall social events. Already a lot of people to know Still some people are quite involved on campus with a lot of things. Basically there is nothing stopping you from interacting as you put it with whoever you chose to! ellorie
As with most things, it really depends whether it's important to you or not. For the most part, medical students tend to stay around Med Sci and since we have our own clubs and events, there isn't necessarily a LOT of interacting with undergrads. But we do have interprofessional events with Law and Nursing and other professional students. I've been involved with a couple of things on campus so I know a few undergrads, but not too many. Personally, I don't know the 2012s and 2013s well, because they were both mostly gone to the hospital when I started. I know a few of the 2013s because they've made an effort to be available for help and mentorship, especially now that they've matched. It's easier to know the classes just above and below you because you are in pre-clerkship together. I think that I probably know the 2014s best because I went to a lot of club events last year and when I was in first year they were doing most of the organizing and running things. And I know some 2016s. I would say that I know probably less people because I am less outgoing, though. The people in my class who go to a lot of events and are involved in organizing and running stuff seem to see a lot of the other classes.
Pantaloons
In general do schulich med students only meet, interact and have classes with those in their own med year/grad class? How about contact with non-med students at western? I'll give you the honest answer. Typically, it seems med students mostly only interact with those in their own med year. However, some social overlap does exist between adjacent med years (1st/2nd's, 2nd's/3rds years). It seems rare for medstudents to venture far outside medschool life. It's the medschool bubble. This seems to be a product of Shared classes: seeing classmates at the same time every day, leads to inevitable socializing, friendships, and... Shared stresses: easier to ***** about exams/clerkship to someone who's going through the same thing as you Shared parties: We finish exams/clerkship blocks at the same time, so we might as well party and celebrate with each other Shared time constraints: We're too busy to hang out with [X non-medstudent...and we'd probably only talk about medschool to them anyway] Shared interests(groups): You know that weird thing you like/do? There are definitely classmates you see every day who like that weird thing too, so you might as well do it together. Exceptions: They definitely exist. Examples might be Different priorities: Would rather hang out with kid/husband/wife (understandable) Significant other (?often met before medschool) is not in medschool...perhaps even in a different city Never goes to class; may not have as many connections Has major commitment with an organization/etc. outside of medschool [*]Takes...greater initiative at social events downtown to meet non-med people [*]Is simply more intro/ambiverted, which is fine. Now, I don't want to paint the picture that everyone only interacts with his/her own class plus a few in the year above or below. I'm making generalizations, but I do think it's a legitimate one. I bet most medstudents at other schools would also draw the same conclusions as me. I can only speak from personal reflections as a 4th year medstudent.
