NeuroPreMed
Hi all, I'm just curious what everyones opinion is on shadowing a doctor that isn't specializing in something you may be most interested in? If everything went exactly as I would like it neurosurgeon would be where I would like to be (I don't need to hear statistics on the chances, I'm saying if I could pick anything and it would happen that would be it at this point in time.) However, There is a doctor I have met on several occassions within the hospital due to family members being admitted, and I have taken quite a liking to him. His specialty however is family medicine. Do you guys think it would be wrong of be to ask him about something like that or do you think I could still ask because who knows maybe that's what I'd end up in? All opinions are appreciated, thanks in advance.
Lactic Folly
do you think I could still ask because who knows maybe that's what I'd end up in? Doesn't sound like you have enough exposure to the field to make an informed decision that it is not for you at this point. Shadowing would be beneficial - remember, an informed career choice is not only about gravitating towards what you like best, but also having weighed the alternatives and made a reasoned decision given the pros and cons of each as they relate to your values. Birdy
Family med covers a bit of everything. If the doctor would be willing to have you shadow, I'd personally jump on the chance if I were you. At worst, you'll get to learn a bit about taking a history, paperwork, the day to day work of a hospitalist. Seems like a good learning opportunity to me.
