Sorry, Another What Are My Chances.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering what your thoughts on how competitive my application is,

Ontario Resident

Last 2 year GPA: 3.73- 3.78 (Not that great)

MCAT: To be written July 25/13

EC: Lab volunteering, working in a public health lab, research for 2 years with possible publication 2nd author

Tutor for elementary kids for 2 years, Peer Mentor for university students 1 year,

1 year executive member of a charity for people in Cameroon,

1 year Tennis Club President, 2 year member at the local Tennis Club

50 hours in Emergency Dept, planning to volunteer more in Mental Health, 8 months shadowing a doctor and counting.

I am doing my Masters this September. If I were to apply in 2014, how much does my Master degree in biochemistry help my gpa (assuming I do well)? Or should I pursue 2nd undergrad instead? Also, any comments on my ECs, there are always more I can do, but any obvious weaknesses?

I am thinking of applying to Western, Queens, Dal and Mac (possibly).

Greatly appreciate your time and feedback! Thank you.

Your GPA is reasonable. If you think you need to get it up, go 2nd ug route. Your master's won't change your GPA.

Also, isn't 8 months of shadowing kind of a waste of time? lol

Your chances will depend on how well you do on your MCAT.

We're all gonna make it brah.

Pretty much what FML said except for the shadowing part (shadowing is never a waste of time and shows your commitment and that a doctor can put up with you).

I think you look pretty good right now, decently competitive. Get a good MCAT score and nail the interviews and I would be surprised if you didn't get accepted somewhere.

If you are not a maritimer..you probably won't get into Dal but I would say you have a decent shot at the other schools. Just make sure you score high on your VR for Mac.

I would also consider applying to more Medical Schools, don't just apply to a few. If you get in one out of 15..you're doing awesome.

Just to make things clear for future derm

With all due respect orcamute is trollish (and that's a euphemism) and is not a medical student so take everything he says with a grain of salt.

Oh really? 3.9 GPA , 36MCAT.

Got an interview at Dal, McMaster and Ottawa.

I am also very associated with M.D's and I know my ****. Probably can diagnose circles around you.

Want to point out what is wrong with my advice? Or are you going to be at the personal ad hominems just for the sake of amusement??

To the OP, where are you from? If you're a Maritime applicant you probably stand a good chance (comparable to my stats, actually). If not, it really depends. Once past the cutoffs Dal cares more about the interview, so if you can get to that point you're good.

thebouque is a pathology resident and undoubtedly "associates" with MDs daily. Perhaps you'd care to describe the pathological significance of serrated adenomas or pro-lymphocytes on peripheral smear, or else the pathophysiology of SIRS symptoms in C. difficile infections. How about the clinical manifestations of an INO? All this must be done from memory without referring to any sources.

Hey, thanks for evaluation. I am aiming for 36 MCAT. The shadowing experience was one of the most meaningful EC I have ever had. And I am hoping the doctor will write my LOR. So for my sake, I hope it is not a waste of time. :)

Hey, thanks for the input! What other medical school would you recommend based my app so far? I just picked the ones that fits my stats so far...

Thanks for the advice. I am from Ontario. So Dal maybe a long shot. Everything really depends on my MCAT this summer. Fingers crossed.

Stop. No cares that you have decent (and only decent) stats. Congrats, you've shadowed and know what a CT is, I assure you adcoms are not impressed that you have some connections. Your first posts a month were about prepping for the MCAT, and now you have 3 interviews. Sounds legit

OP, I would agree that unless you know you can be VERY productive in an MSc I would look into a second degree.

Only on pre-med forums will you hear that 3.9-36 is only decent....

Am I crazy or is that a funny way of saying it? Wouldn't you normally use the word "had" as in you already gone through the interview rather than saying it like you would do the interview in the future? Someone please help.
