srs bsns = serious business

Meaning, you take what people say seriously in terms of answering to their posts or making your own. I know there are probably as many trolls as serious people, but curious as to how people truly feel about online forums and their validity to real life.

My rules for ALL aspects of life: I believe half of what I see and none of what I hear.

When it comes to forums, unless I know the person in real life I don't generally put much emphasis on what they say. I also couldn't care less if someone chooses to believe what I say or not (smart in general) because at the end of the day its just an online forum... big whoop.

The average person who uses this forum probably doesn't know anyone in real life on here (and if they did, they'd most likely be talking to that person directly). For people who use this forum for information (instead of entertainment) they likely pay attention to rational posts; ones that are reasonably well supported and moderate. If something makes sense then it'll be considered. That being said, at the end of the day this is still the internet, so everything can and should be taken with a grain of salt. There are really only 2 choices in the poll, because the first and last option are the same.

I've been around here off-and-on for well over a decade, with only a handful of current active posters having more seniority. Dunno if that means I think this is "srs bsns". Probably means I have some sort of psychiatric disorder, actually.

What I have noticed is that the signal:noise ratio has gotten progressively worse over the years, not only here but on the Internet in general. (I also remember the September that never ended, and it's all been downhill from there...)

I try and provide relevant information on topics that I can speak to, but I do so selectively.

Same. Certain posters have given me invaluable advice and support over the years. Most of it was indirect through reading older threads but I've met a few really cool med students and docs that ended up being pretty helpful. That said you've obviously got to learn to take things in context - there's a bunch of trolling and bad info and whatnot and that's just a function of becoming more popular.

As for knowing people afk, at least with our school there has been plenty of backtracing so we usually find out who most posters are.

I know lots of people from the forum IRL, and know who others are even though I don't know them personally.

I think there is lots of good advice on here but you have to wade through a ton of BS to get to it. I understand that people want to help but a lot of the time they don't have the knowledge or they just post for the sake of saying something. Any post that prefaces itself with an "I'm not sure, but.." just shouldn't be posted. Once you know your way around and who has the goods then its easier to just ask them directly. For example if I needed info on Queens I would find a 2016 Queens student, if you need advice on french schools, there's FD.

I figured it would be a lot of depends here coming out. I was just interested because after being around the forums for a bit I can't help but notice a lot of people who like to argue with each other on opinion posts for pages upon pages. I just could never imagine how these people have the time to keep paying attention to the forums and responding all the time...

You mean like bragging about getting 100% in a course?

I've lurked this forum long before I posted. I won't bother getting sucked into one of your inane arguments. You have a knack for acting holier than thou, supposedly mature/above petty things, and then causing fights on here. Really sad for someone your age. Why don't you run along now and find some moron more on your level to have an internet battle with. :)

And for the record, the 100% wasn't bragging. It was more of "cooler". It's like hitting a trick shot in a sport.

And then doing an hour long victory dance and building a shrine in your own honour?

You clearly don't play sports, or understand victory dances. I know you two are friends, but generally, white knighting on the interwebz is left for male to female situations.

I am somewhat amazed at the laziness of some people in this forum. I have yet to understand how asking applicants bout specific programs and their schools is easier than calling or googling. Half of the questions people ask could be found on googles front page... And then the information we give out here could be completely wrong or we don't know... So why ask us?!
