What are interest groups and what are they good for?

Recommended Posts

I have seen the term "interest group" in several forums now, and my med student friends talk about it.

So since I have googled it and found very little info about it, I'm assuming it's pretty common sense what it is.

I am going to guess that it's a meeting where:

-students interested in the same residency/specialty meet and discuss why they want to go into it

-concerns they have about it and then do research on those concerns and share them with the group

-invite speakers/mentors/specialists (???)

anything else I'm missing?

Not really - I think you got it.

Mentorship is really, really important in medicine. The entire model is based on mentorship, we learn from the people above us and teach the people below us.

Those interest groups help set up those sorts of relationships. What research works? What are programs looking for? What clinical electives are best? What staff help students the most? These just some of things those groups help out with :)

Here usually the interest groups have a lot of talks - we get specialists to come in and talk about why they chose their career and why they like it and how to get into it. It's a lot of fun and it's a free lunch :)

Free lunch makes anything exciting for med students *looks at RBC/Desjardins... conferences*
