LOC experience

Recommended Posts

So I have been stressed out because I wanted to get everything done before I leave to spend more time with my family..

I e-mailed specialist at each RBC and Scotia bank and they got back to me within a day (which was great!).

However, I noticed that these 'specialist' would then relegate my questions and application to their juniors...which I didn't really mind because they were still professional but I thought it was little weird that the specialist wouldn't deal directly with students

Anyhow, seeing that RBC charges their credit card after first year, I decided to go with Scotia, under the assumption that I don't want to buy a property/estate...although I think that would be much better in financial sense (I think).... (then I would have definitely have gone with RBC).

Scotia actually emailed their application directly and asked me to fill it out, so the first meeting was not even needed.

However I decided to drop my form in person and ask additional questions (about perks, I was interested in finding out if they would offer more perks).

they met with me and required my passport photo and confirmation of enrollment which I provided (they had me login to my school account to show/print them about my 'admitted' status with the program. And then that was it, they would send my app for credit check and it would take approximately 2-3 business days and I would review and sign document to get access.

I asked about perks... apart from the generic free banking & chequing etc... which is not really perks since president's choice already offers that as with TD (I really, really dislike scotia and RBC bank hours, I wished they were more like TD....)

Anywhoo..that was it, I asked the specialist if there were any other perks, and he said if we refer other students to the bank we get 2 free movie tickets (...)

Overall, I had a pleasant experience and if you want to split free movie tickets let me know and I would have you referred by me...? :P

Inspi(red), I signed up with Scotia too. I linked my scotiaOne debit card with my Scene card at the time of signing my LOC. I heard you can use the debit card to pay tuition (the drawback being you have to line up) and get scene points, which is great.

The caveat is that the debit card says you can get a maximum of 600 points in one transaction, which is hardly satisfying unless anybody knows of a way around this limitation. The point exchange is $5:1pt.

I would love to put it on CC but most schools (including Ottawa) that I know of have stopped accepting CC. =(

Yeah, I would love this as well. $22K tuition at U of T = between $220-$440 travel depending on price of tickets. No limit per transaction either and my main CC is $10K limit, so it would be pretty easy if they allowed it.

They don't because visa charges the business a percentage to use the card there - so a non significant portion of your visa payment would go to visa in the end. That is how all these card's benefits are in large part paid for. The school has no reason to allow that to happen :)

That is true...and the same reason why shop owners are annoyed with VISA's recent push for people to use their CCs for all their tiny purchases.

Btw, just want to chime in on my updated experience with Scotia.

After signing for my LOC around July 2, I figured all my accounts would be available on my scotiaOne account (Debit, CC and LOC). Fair enough, I checked and only my VISA and my debit account was present. I figured it would take a few days for the LOC to set in. I proceed to activate my VISA.

A few days later, my VISA account disappeared from my account. Either I was imagining that I saw it earlier, or it really disappeared, I was not sure.

Anyway, 2 weeks later I call them up because my LOC still wasn't showing. They said they were aware of the problem and that they would fix it immediately. Ok..

That same day, I received a letter in the mail stating that my VISA has now been confirmed to be closed. (which now confirms that it was delisted from my online account). They mentioned that the reason for the mix up was because I had the papers drafted in Ottawa and then sent over to complete in Toronto.

 Quite frustrated and I hope this get sorted out ASAP.

Actually,

the process was easy enough but I'm not sure if I will go with scotia afterall (I haven't signed actual document and said I would need some time...the rep got back to me that he will reopen the bank account if necessary meanwhile he will close it)

RBC rep e-mailed me lengthy e-mail about the benefit and all....(and RBC is the official sponsor for medical association) and 50K limit does really got to me... and the fact that I have to close my existing credit cards to get full limit was little difficult with me as well.

I don't know what to do. They couldn't take care of it fast enough and now I will be away for about a month. I really taking time off to see a bank person during their work hours which ends at 4pm :S

I really do wish RBC hours are extended...
