BedroomBully11
I saw someone mention something about "First Nurse Assist" in one of my other post. I wanted to make an individual post regarding this topic. Can someone please explain to me what a "First Nurse Assist" is or "Assistant." To me it seems like it is in correlation with perioperative nursing but I am not sure. Thank you for your help.
hexonu
I've only seen surgical residents, RN's and a few NPs in this role. If you take the RN route you have to get certified as an RNFA which takes 3 years (I think?) and extra certifications. They assist in surgeries and do minor clipping, cutting and suturing under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

Louisarlen
An RNFA is a Registered Nurse First Assistant is an Advanced Practicing nurse in the operating room. To be accepted into an RNFA program, the RN must have at least two years of professional nursing experience in the operating room environment and achieved the credential of CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse).
