Selstaar
So, I've been volunteering with an organization in Hamilton since my first year in university (currently going into third year). At the beginning of first year, I pretty much had to fight (through repeated emails, phone calls etc.) to get in at this organization and I was happy to do do it because it was something I was really interested in. I also enjoyed my time there and continued during the summer. In my second year the supervisor (who ended up leaving after first semester) wasn't willing neccesarily to accomodate my school schedule. So, while I had little trouble making it to the centre to volunteer in my first semester during the second semester, I had to miss some of my classes just to be able to make it there. At this point in time, I've been there over 2 years and put in 100+ hours with them. I'm not really enjoying it anymore and frankly, I feel it's pretty much a time sink: it's an hour and a half from there to my place and I usually volunteer in three hour sessions (essentially I spend as much time traveling there as I actually do there). I've got a bunch of other extracurriculars I'll be doing during the school year including: 5 clubs (exec on 3), university choir, intramural volleyball, volunteering at another organization for 8 hours a week in second semester, 2 admission committees, 1 undergrad council. Under normal circumstances I would have dropped this activity without a second thought. My issue is though that this is my only long-term volunteer commitment in university (I have others I did in hs)...but I hate the idea of doing something I no longer enjoy because it "looks good" on paper. My options are to stick it out and try to make it work with my schedule, to drop it entirely, or to try to help out in another area of the organization. What do you guys think I should do? I say drop it. Make sure you end it diplomatically and thank them for the opportunity of being there. Get contact information and ask if you can use them as a reference later if you need one.
