Depends on the class, chances are you aren't going to pull out your laptop in physics, but if you're taking an History I type way faster than I write.

I take notes by hand. It is easier to create diagrams, write out equations, link concepts together, etc. when taking notes by hand. You will also tend to retain material better if you take notes by hand. Here are some articles and studies on this:
