Preseverence has paid off

Recommended Posts

Interview: Yes

GPA: 3.6 plus 0.2 (Masters of Education)

Context: Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario

ECs: Shadowing a Cardiologist, AIDS Thunder Bay, Heart and Stroke, Canadian Cancer Society

Interview Location/Date/Time (Or include as much information as you'd like if you'd like to remain a little more anonymous): Thunder Bay, March 30th, 2014

Age/Non-trad: (I like to include this because NOSM seems to attract so many non-traditional applicants) - 30

# of previous applications: 5 (Interviewed 5 times - should be a professional by now!)

I applied 5 times to Mac and interviewed the last 4 years when I finally was accepted back in the day when they only had 100 seats. Its nice to hear stories like this as they can be extremely inspirational for others who wonder if they should keep applying or just give up and move on to plan B.

I approached my last interview telling myself I have alot to offer and to just be myself. The interview started off like no other one and I quickly found myself in my element talking about a passion for hockey and what it meant for me to be a goalie. I remember going with my dad who drove me to the interview. On the way home I told him I felt like that was not the last time I would see Mac and it turns out that was the year I got accepted. I feel very priviledged to have become a doctor and my years of applying admidst the naysayers suggesting it isn't to be I think only strengthened my conviction that medicine is what I wanted to do. I came from a teaching background with a minor in science. I am a specialist now. I wouldn't change anything about my years of applying as I think the disappointments of not getting in after being interviewed so many times serves to make you stronger, more focussed on your goal and in many respects may show the school your level of committment. These were the best years of my academic life and some of my closest friends are from my med school days. Just do your best on interview day and everything will hopefully go your way!!

Best of luck, 6th time is the CHARM! 5th time the charm, I also love hearing these stories, especially as a third time interviewee. They are definitely the type of motivation I need to continue and stay focused to pursue my dream :)

You have another chance!! Hopefully 3rd time will be your charm!! The only other advice I would offer is to be yourself and if the interview lends itself to this, take charge, engage your interviewers in something you have a passion about and show them why you would be a good addition to their program. All the best to you!

Thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind and practice doing that. I felt like the interview went better for me last year than my first time because I was more relaxed and able to show more of my personality during the interview. However, I know there is definitely room for improvement for this year.

Moved these posts out from the Interview Invite thread to keep the thread 'clean' and easy to navigate for those looking at stats. Thanks for encouraging the interviewees however! They need all the praise and confidence boosting they can get at this junction.

Related to the topic of this thread, I applied 5 times to medical school ... 3 times to Dalhousie Med (3 interviews, 2 outright post-interview rejections, 1 waitlist) and NOSM twice (1 pre-interview rejection, 1 interview --> 1 acceptance). This journey was spread out over an 11 year span as I put medicine on the back burner for a number of years ... Dal Med was my attempts in mid-20s, NOSM my attempts in my 30's.

Congrats to all those that are persistent to pursue their goals. I know that there is someone in E2013 that applied 6 times. As well the most I have ever heard of is one of my friends who just got into Calgary after 8 times!

Just from anecdotal evidence I would think that the average is somewhere around 2 or 3, if not closer to 3.
