Post Interview Discussion 2014

Recommended Posts

Messed up a few questions badly, but interviewers were incredibly nice and warm which helped as I stumbled in some portions.

Thank you to Meds2017 for taking the time to show us around in that chilly weather all around campus, and the medical building, and for answering so many questions! :)

Exactly how I felt. The interviewers were really nice to me. I could have done better on a few of the questions. And the class of 2017 meds were amazing, I really appreciate all of their efforts!!!

There's even less people who posted interview stats. I'm very curious as to how many people were sent interviews? Could they have decreased it this year?

Hadn't heard anything about a reduction in interview numbers, and our interview days seemed pretty similar numbers-wise to last year's. I'd say it's just a reduction in forum activity for Western in particular.

Probably 100 like from 2009-2012.

All forums this year seem to have decreased activity, McMaster and Queen's are pretty dead.

Heyyy the way that the interviews work is that the interview pool reflects the applicant pool. Essentially the stats were upped to reflect the 2018s who applied and made the cut-offs.

There are usually about ~470 interviews given out every year because this is the number that has been found to get 171 acceptances with some wait-list room (that's how the interview invites generally work at all the schools).

Perhaps less individuals are using this forum as their means for obtaining information? (tons more information is now available on our websites, prospective student sites and Q/A twitter forums). Also, I know Western has different programs where you are matched with a mentor (so I have an undergrad mentee that can ask me questions and meet up for coffee really any time to prep for MCAT & interview) which is probably less nerve wracking then the forums.

However, in terms of excitement, interview day was a blast! It was great meeting a lot of the 2018s and I'm very pumped for the next round to roll through, and so are the rest of the 2017s :) !!!

If you have any questions let us know :D

I'm surprised that the forum is so dead (except for U of T subforum) I expected that the students would become more tech savvy each year and take part in online discussions. Is there another forum people are chatting on besides SDN that I'm not aware of? Otherwise I don't see a reason for this forum being so dead...

I've kind of been thinking the same thing. Was hoping to see more discussion about how the last interview weekend went (actual interviews/socials/tours/etc).

Has anyone toured both Windsor and London campus to draw comparisons between them? I think we have a month still to change our preference if we want to.

I talked to the admin about the campus preferences because I was unsure about my initial choice and they told me we have until 2 weeks after the last interview to email them to change the campus choice.

I haven't been to the Windsor campus but from what I gathered by talking to Windsor students is that London campus is more beautiful and London itself is more lively city. However, being in Windsor has lots of advantages due to the smaller class size.

I had previously listed London as my campus of preference but now I'm 95% sure that I wanna change to Windor

Just filled out the post-interview survey so I thought I'd carry over my thoughts to here. I really enjoyed my experience interviewing at Schulich! The 2017s were brimming with enthusiasm and I had a great time chatting with lots of them about their experiences so far. I thought it was a nice touch that you're paired up with a student who escorts you to the interview room and helps keep you calmed down :) The tour was good (med student lounge was pretty cool) and the video entertaining. My only gripe was that they only gave veggies, cheese and crackers - no lunch...

I also did a tour of Windsor campus. Major pros are the small class size (you can tell how well these guys have bonded in just a few months), sweet anatomy lab and clinical skills area, tons of group study rooms or quiet study areas, greater attention by faculty, less 'hiearchy' encountered in clerkship. Cons are that you're not actually the same classroom as the prof (can be a pro if you want to nap), smaller city with less to do outside of class, smaller teaching hospitals (less rare cases or more exposure to some specialities), not on main campus.

If I remember anything else major, I'll edit! Let's keep the discussion going. :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Interviewed yesterday, and wanted to say I had an enjoyable time especially because of the 2017s who led me around and made me feel comfortable! My interviewers were also nice and seemed to be genuinely interested in what I had to say.

I got the chance to talk to a couple of students from Windsor, but felt like the official presentation didn't really touch on the campus choices at all. At McMaster, students from the two regional campuses came up during the presentation and sold their campus really well; I didn't get the same sense here for Windsor :/

Quick question:

Were any of you asked to do anything with the interview confirmation that we were asked to print out either before or after the interview?

I wasn't, so I was wondering if maybe I missed something?

I handed it to the person who checked me in, but I feel like it wasn't necessary and she probably just tossed it out. :P

I asked her what to do with it and she said "I can shred that for you if you like", haha
