I will have biotechnology as my specialist next year. Regarding health care experience of the program, what should I do ? like will volunteering at hospitals count ? Also, can you apply to medical school after PA ? Thank you all The only school I know of requiring health care experience is U of T. They require at least 1 year full time experience (1680 hours or so) in a healthcare setting where you are actively involved in treating/interacting with patients and have some sort of responsibility/liability. Volunteering does not count as experience unfortunately, and neither do jobs like research assistants or lab technicians because they don't directly involve person to patient contact. As far as applying to med schools after PA, it's a very new program so I don't think many if any have already jumped ship. Keep in mind though that the whole idea of being a PA is not to be just another stepping stone for med school, it's intended to be a career in itself. It is based more on life experience, personality/demenour, volunteerism, and of course marks. I also agree with Ryan, going to PA school means that you are dedicated to becoming a PA, much like going to medical school means you are dedicated to becoming an MD. Faculty will screen for this if you get an interview. They don't want someone who is only in it to become a PA because they don't want to take the time to go the MD route, or couldn't. Being a PA is a profession itself, and PA and PA students need to be content with the fact that they are not an MD, but get the privilege through trust, licensure and their training to practise at close to, if not equal scope of practise (depending on speciality) as the MD they work as a team with.
