Because you likely won't be able to afford one.

 

Hypothetically, you become a specialist and make $550,000. It can mean one thing if you live alone with that salary (baller status), and something entirely different if you have a family. I guess if you wanted to live alone then it would be practical, and within the next ten years the aventador price should come down to around $200k.

For me, a dream car is any car right now haha. I love driving, and I have wanted one for ages.

 

Here's a related question: What would be your choice of affordable cars, if you were to buy one today (assuming a typical med student budget)?

 

I have a Toyota Corolla (and would buy another in a heartbeat). Affordable. Simple. Incredibly Reliable.:D

Once your mortgage is paid off, it can be quite practical to get a 200k car. A family doesn't make it harder... your spouse can provide more income as well as get you tax cuts. :)

Realistically would you rather die and pass on much more money than the price of that aventador to your kids (which wouldn't really be teaching them a good lesson about providing their own means) or buy something you've always wanted and can probably easily afford when your in your late 50s/early 60s.

 

All these cool cars really aren't practical when you're in your 20s-40s. Once you've become an established professional nearing retirement living without kids it's a completely different ball park.

 

Just saw this now... whoops.

 

To answer the question, I would much rather pass this on to my kids than to have an overpriced car that depreciates the moment I drive it off the lot. The kids are a better investment.

Yayyyy. Secretly, I was hoping for some input on any random, realistic car purchase by a med student.

 

I literally just bought this car myself. 2014 models look hot ;)

Your spouse is gonna give you her/his income to buy your 200k dream car? What about her/his 200k dream hobby? Who pays for that?

If you think you can do it, get a used car. You'll save a ton of the depreciation costs, and if you stick to reliable models and pick cars with a good history then maintenance won't be an issue.

 

Once you have a steady income, you can upgrade

I like the look of a Lotus, although I don't think I'd ever buy a car like that because I hate driving.

 

I like the idea of the Rolls Royce Phantom. With a cute driver who can wait in my awesome car while I run in to do consults, and have a tea waiting for me when I get back? Awesome.

today I dropped off my moms car at a detail auto shop and as the owner was driving me home (they offer valet service to and from the auto shop) I asked him if any of his clients has a bugatti and he said his client's friend owns a bugatti in Vancouver. Not really surprised there is one in Vancouver but still very jealous! One day!

Pagani Huayra would be a dream car to have in my garage.

 

In vintages, I'd like to own a silver Ferrari 550 Barchetta.

 

Realistically, I look forward to getting a BMW M6 Gran Coupe soon, however bimmers are losing their driver's car touch with electronic steering (I prefer hydraulic) and fake engine noises they pump in the interior through speakers. Plus their cars now weigh in tons. The new M4, anyone? Way to slash naturally aspirated V8 engine from e90 for a v6.
