Requesting deferral

Does any current student know the procedure for requesting a deferral? I know it's for "exceptional" reasons only, and I believe my reason qualifies. How would I go about requesting it? Do I mail in my acceptance form and money, and enclose an extra letter outlining my reasons for requesting a deferral?
