What are my chances for UofT or Western

Recommended Posts

My GPA for the following Dental schools are:

Western- 88% (Best 2 years with 1st year 5/5 courses & 2nd year 4/5 courses)
UofT- 3.81 (w/ worst year dropped)
Alberta- 3.85 (w/ worst year dropped + GPA formula)
UBC - 87.8% (I'm OOP)

I'm wondering, what are my chances for the above schools? Keep in mind I'm IP for Alberta and Ontario but OOP for UBC. Thank-you, I appreciate it.

UofT. Almost zero chance as a 3.81. You pretty much have to do a masters. I would even consider not applying - but there's no harm, so go ahead.

Western. With the trend as it is, probably a 89-90 will be required for an interview alone. BUT even if 88 is the cutoff, your send year was only 0.8 - and they adjust downwards quite a bit for that. Methinks you are done.

Alberta - a chance - but so many people are 3.95+ in their system, so no guarantee.

UBC - a chance - in fact, considering how high tuition is, if you get an interview, your chances aren't bad.

Western - possible with good DAT scores and a good interview (depending on to what extent they penalize a 4/5 course load year)

UofT - the interview cut is 3.91ish, so you would need a thesis-based MSc (in which case you would become a competitive applicant).

Not familiar with the other 2 schools.

Additionally, have you considered a 5th year? with a 5/5 course load and an average above 90 this could considerably increase your chances at Western at the very least (b/c they look at best 2 years). However, the 5th year alone would not be beneficial for UofT.

Western: you have a good chance at getting an interview. My only concern is the 4/5 courses in your second year. They apply a slight penalty for a lighter course load. This year, the cutoffs to get an interview were: 87.0% best 2-year GPA and 19 RC. I suspect that the GPA cutoff will increase slightly and the RC cutoff shouldn't be above 19. But you never know. All depends on the strength of the applicant pool. The interview at Western is key.

U of T: unfortunately, the only way you would get an interview with a 3.81 is if you also have a master's or PhD.

Take the following info with a grain of salt, because I only applied to Ontario schools.

Alberta: judging by reading the forums and seeing stats of successful applicants, you should be considered competitive especially if you're IP.

UBC: from what I was told, they only invite around 15-20 OOP students for an interview and accept around 3-5 (don't quote me on this). If I were you, I would still apply. After the interview, they forget about GPA and DAT scores, and your acceptance hinges entirely on your interview/PBL performance.

All of the info above is based on the assumption that you have competitive DAT scores as well.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

UWO with an 88% might have been possible if you took a full course load. The cutoff for interviews was 87 last year; however, no one knows how much they penalize for a non-full course load. The entrance average however was a 90%. Unfortunately, your chances at UWO are quite small due to the above reasons. UofT would simply not be possible without a Masters.

Alberta, on the other hand, you have a great chance of getting in! 3.94 is VERY competitive, especially since you're IP. I know an OOP who got in this cycle with the exact same GPA. With a decent interview and DAT you should have no problems at all as an IP.
