orangepeels
On the application it differentiates between Volunteer activities and Extracurricular activities. What exactly is the distinction between the two? Does being president of club count as volunteer or extracurricular? Also, under formal education, do we include our current degree? Under research: is it only the research done/publications/posters or do awards for research go under this section as well?
MD2015
Volunteer activities = altruistic endeavours. ECs = any other activities you undertake For example, if you help out an elderly neighbour, you are volunteering regardless of whether the activity is organized or not. Tutoring for free is volunteering.
Stegalls
Is shadowing considered volunteering or extra-curriculars? I wasn't paid for it. Also, I did a co-op term at a unit in a hospital in high school. It was part of my school's curriculum but highly influential to my decision to pursue medicine and it lasted an entire semester. So I'm wondering whether or it it should be placed under formal education, volunteer, or extra-curricular or other?
synch
It really doesn't matter which category you put your activities under. The categories are there to help you organise your sketch and to help the admissions committees for the various programs view your sketch in an organised way. phoenixfire
I would put shadowing under extra-curriculars. I assume by shadowing you mean you mostly stood and watched as the physician/nurses/etc. did all the work, so you're not really doing anything altruistic. Unless you were involved and helped out, I wouldn't call it volunteering.
