meddog Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 I am one of the "few" (I think) unlucky ones who has spent the summer wondering whether or not (s)he might get a spot at UBC this year. Now that our chances are slim-to-none, I've been wondering if I'll soon get to find out my NAQ score. Do they keep it a secret until we are either fully rejected or accepted? Any ideas from those of you out there who may have spent a whole summer on the wait-list? I've already re-applied so I guess it doesn't matter too much, but I am curious.
khaleesi90 Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 I'm on the exact same boat as you. I heard that they should be out at least by next week. I think we just need to wait one more week for our scores.
fugacity Posted August 21, 2014 Report Posted August 21, 2014 There are some last minute no-shows, so I wouldn't say your chances are next to none =)
meddog Posted August 21, 2014 Author Report Posted August 21, 2014 Fugacity: do you mean that usually there are some last-minute no-shows, or are you aware of some this year in particular? How many spots might realistically open up?
fugacity Posted August 21, 2014 Report Posted August 21, 2014 I am not aware of any no-shows, this year or last year. That said, someone could be taking a very long time to consider which school to go to, and hence why it is always a possibility.
bclionsfan Posted August 21, 2014 Report Posted August 21, 2014 I've heard of people paying the deposits for 2 schools then cancelling last minute on one of them I can't imagine how excruciating this is for you guys. Best of luck!
meddog Posted August 21, 2014 Author Report Posted August 21, 2014 Thanks for that, it is definitely excruciating. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. If I get a last-minute email telling me to stop my current life and pack up and move to Vancouver this weekend I am not sure how I'll manage it (but I will...somehow...).

Hey Fugacity, would you by chance have any rough idea how many people are left on the shortened waitlist?
PiKi Posted August 21, 2014 Report Posted August 21, 2014 I was in your position last summer, I finally got off the waitlist once classes started for the class of 2017, then I got to see my scores. Don't loose hope and don't give up!
khaleesi90 Posted August 21, 2014 Report Posted August 21, 2014 I just got in!!!! SMP!!! Did anyone else get an offer????
B3.572A Posted August 21, 2014 Report Posted August 21, 2014 Wow!! Congratulations! Good luck with your medical studies.
meddog Posted August 21, 2014 Author Report Posted August 21, 2014 Congratulations Khaleesi90!! That's awesome news. Good luck with the last-minute life-change!
meddog Posted August 21, 2014 Author Report Posted August 21, 2014 Now is there anyone else out there still waiting?
fugacity Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 I just got in!!!! SMP!!! Did anyone else get an offer???? Congrats! What did I say??
Sali Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 Now is there anyone else out there still waiting? There was around 6 of us on the original blog after the wait list had beed shorted including you, myself, and Khaleesi90 (now accepted). And thats not including everyone not on premed.
PiKi Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 Congratulations Khalessi90!!!!! See you on Monday!!!
Lisaannesteel Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 I'm still waiting in agony! Wonderful but painful to hear of others getting in!!
meddog Posted August 22, 2014 Author Report Posted August 22, 2014 Yeah... it's now 4:28pm on Friday. Unless someone is manning the office over the weekend it looks like our run this year has come to an end. Big congrats and condolences to those who stuck it out and have to wait another year regardless. This was a tough summer.
Lisaannesteel Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 Then tonight is officially the worst night of the summer especially since I can't apply this year bc of my expired mcat. Just breathe...
meddog Posted August 22, 2014 Author Report Posted August 22, 2014 That really sucks, Lisaannesteel. Sorry to hear that. Are you going to re-write? Does anyone know of other people who spent a whole summer on the wait list and then still didn't get in the next time they applied? Has anyone spent 2 or more summers on the wait-list? Maybe I don't want to know the answer to that as I'd rather just envision myself having very good odds for the next round.
Lisaannesteel Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 You'll get it next time!! That's what I've heard from everyone! And yes, I am rewriting...not looking forward to it!!

Walker from UCalg talked about this and it probably applies to UBC too (unless UBC waitlist is massive and never gets cut down). He said that people who are on the waitlist until the end are not significantly different (he was talking from a statistical PoV) from people who have gotten in. If you are still on the waitlist this year it's incredibly unlikely you WONT get in next year.
Lisaannesteel Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Hey Medici! Have you any idea if this holds if one doesn't apply the next year and instead the year following that?
medici Posted September 1, 2014 Report Posted September 1, 2014 Hey Medici! Have you any idea if this holds if one doesn't apply the next year and instead the year following that? Now Walker didn't touch on that, but the point was that even if nothing in your application changes, you still have an incredibly high chance of getting in. If you wait a year and improve your app, your chances can only increase (unless NAQ/AQ breakdown changes or something).
PiKi Posted September 1, 2014 Report Posted September 1, 2014 I barely changed my application after I got off the waitlist and got in right away this year. Its possible! Good luck!
