The Agonizing Wait-List

Recommended Posts

I am one of the "few" (I think) unlucky ones who has spent the summer wondering whether or not (s)he might get a spot at UBC this year. Now that our chances are slim-to-none, I've been wondering if I'll soon get to find out my NAQ score.  Do they keep it a secret until we are either fully rejected or accepted? Any ideas from those of you out there who may have spent a whole summer on the wait-list?  I've already re-applied so I guess it doesn't matter too much, but I am curious.

Fugacity: do you mean that usually there are some last-minute no-shows, or are you aware of some this year in particular? How many spots might realistically open up?

I am not aware of any no-shows, this year or last year.  That said, someone could be taking a very long time to consider which school to go to, and hence why it is always a possibility.

Thanks for that, it is definitely excruciating. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. If I get a last-minute email telling me to stop my current life and pack up and move to Vancouver this weekend I am not sure how I'll manage it (but I will...somehow...).

Hey Fugacity, would you by chance have any rough idea how many people are left on the shortened waitlist?

I was in your position last summer, I finally got off the waitlist once classes started for the class of 2017, then I got to see my scores. Don't loose hope and don't give up!  ^_^

Now is there anyone else out there still waiting?

There was around 6 of us on the original blog after the wait list had beed shorted including you, myself, and Khaleesi90 (now accepted). And thats not including everyone not on premed.

Yeah... it's now 4:28pm on Friday.  Unless someone is manning the office over the weekend it looks like our run this year has come to an end.  Big congrats and condolences to those who stuck it out and have to wait another year regardless.  This was a tough summer.

That really sucks, Lisaannesteel.  Sorry to hear that.  Are you going to re-write?

Does anyone know of other people who spent a whole summer on the wait list and then still didn't get in the next time they applied?  Has anyone spent 2 or more summers on the wait-list?  Maybe I don't want to know the answer to that as I'd rather just envision myself having very good odds for the next round. <_<

Walker from UCalg talked about this and it probably applies to UBC too (unless UBC waitlist is massive and never gets cut down). He said that people who are on the waitlist until the end are not significantly different (he was talking from a statistical PoV) from people who have gotten in. If you are still on the waitlist this year it's incredibly unlikely you WONT get in next year.

Hey Medici! Have you any idea if this holds if one doesn't apply the next year and instead the year following that?

Now Walker didn't touch on that, but the point was that even if nothing in your application changes, you still have an incredibly high chance of getting in. If you wait a year and improve your app, your chances can only increase (unless NAQ/AQ breakdown changes or something).
