decentcigars
I had to pass a practical and theory workshop to work with animals in my lab. Should I put that under formal education, a different category, or not at all? Thanks!
MD2015
Formal Education.
robclem21
I disagree. I would say mention that under research, perhaps along with the work in the lab you did? Formal Education to me is university or college degrees. But I could be wrong.
yesmedyes
I wouldn't think it should go under formal education unless it shows up on your transcript.
xClashx
Do things like these actually count? I had to do a lab safety training to work in our lab. Got a certificate for it, allowing me to work in a lab for 3 years. What about certificates for CPR and first aid?
PassionMD
I would consider that as part of your research experience not formal education.
xClashx
So under research, I would put that I was certified for a lab safety training?
zzz_etrigan
I wonder about this too because I am CPR Certified, have done basic WHMIS, certification of Radiation safety, animal safety, biosafety level 2...I mean all these things are required for research depending on the field, if you have done research and a potential publication isn't it redundant to include this? xClashx
Another question, which category would shadowing go under? Other? If so, it wont let me talk about my experience.
PassionMD
IMO: - Shadowing under EC - CPR..etc under others - Under research, explain what you did and what you learned. How much does completing WHMIS tell about you? I'd think given the 150 limit; focus on other deeper stuff reflective of the experience.
MD2015
Do things like these actually count? I had to do a lab safety training to work in our lab. Got a certificate for it, allowing me to work in a lab for 3 years. What about certificates for CPR and first aid? I would consider that part of Formal Education. I took language lessons for years outside of the school system, and put these in Formal Education. Similarly, in undergrad I had internships that involved patient rehabilitation care and I put these in Formal Education, indicating which course was involved. The bottom line is that your objective is to give them an accurate overall impression of who you are, highlighting those aspects that demonstrate your suitability for medicine. My fluency in these several languages show that I am able to interact with a wider population and the patient experience I gained in rehabilitation (together with my grades in these internships) demonstrated my training and suitability. Formal Education was the perfect place for me to market myself with specific information about my skills and experience which would not have been appropriate elsewhere.
