knispow
Hello everyone, So I'm heading back uSask for a second degree, improve my GPA and then apply to med. I just need to make the right choice on what degree to pursue. I have narrowed it down to Kinesiology vs Phys Pharm. Any of you guys can weigh in on these degrees? I'm a science person and would do great in a science degree, so will kinesiology degree be alright? In other words, is it mostly science based with multiple-choice question exams in most of their KIN courses? I'm just really interested in anatomy/exercise science, so I want to pursue KIN. But I'm wary because I can't deal well with humanities type of courses, with lots of essays and "opinion" based write-ups. Thanks for the input. Enjoy the Sask Fall, it's beautiful out there! Snooopy
I can't comment much on the kinesiology degree exam questions (I took about 4 kin classes and they were mostly MCQs) as I did a phys pharm degree. In terms of improving your GPA, kinesiology classes really boosted my average, however I also found that with alot of studying I could get high 90's in phys pharm courses as well. Phys pharm made studying alot easier for me during my first (and second) year of medical school, as many of the classes were a review of my undergraduate degree courses. So, phys pharm helped give me a really strong basis for concepts that are important during medical school and I am really happy that I took that degree! That being said, my classmates who took kinesiology seemed to have a very easy time with the anatomy course. If you want science courses, I think both colleges are good - but phys pharm seems to fit your criteria more than kin (phys pharm has pretty much all science, no humanities - and also has exercise physiology classes. I think some people tend to gravitate towards kin more because some people think it is easier to obtain good grades with less work - but I can't comment on that because I didn't do a kin degree. Hopefully someone can weigh in with more information on a kin degree for you. Best Wishes
knispow
Hey thanks for the feedback. Yea it'd be great if I can also get the perspective of a KIN student about how the majority of the courses are setup. So, do you really think it's possible to get great marks in phys pharm as well? It's the amount of content that puts me off. I have already done the MCIM degree here, and although it was a great time, learning from all these courses, it was just a really tough program. I'm not sure how different it would be in phys pharm. To chose, I just need to make sure that I place myself into the best possible position to upgrade my GPA. Thanks again
Snooopy
Definitely I think it is possible! My last year before medicine I received 90 89 91 95 97 94 and 91 in my PHPY classes (but I did study quite a bit), and the classes really helped me in medicine. I initially started out in MCIM too, and it is a very challenging program, so naturally I switched out lol (actually I didn't enjoy the immunology section very much). PHPY is much easier that MCIM in my opinion - and based on the number of PHPY students in my class, many students were accepted based on their marks from PHPY. However, I know how frustrating it must be to have already done one degree and now need to go back and do another one to increase your GPA to get in. In that respect, maybe kin would be the best choice for you to improve your GPA. My suggestion would be to talk to someone in kin (since noone on here seems to be weighing in) and ask them about their workload/content and what their class averages typically look like? It's awesome to hear how dedicated you are to getting into Medicine and completing another degree to get there. Good for you and I hope everything works out!
