thsc Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 "W" for withdrawn without academic penalty -- is this taken negatively? Absolutely...
rmorelan Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 Absolutely... well I mean it can effect you if the course number drops below 5.0 for the year, but if it was taken with out penalty it won't effect your GPA. Many schools don't even look at the transcript so it cannot impact you for sure at those schools. Generally it is pretty benign - was there some specific issue you were thinking of?

rmorelan Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 oh i was under the impression that the schools receive your official transcripts? no? They get it but many schools don't use it other than computing a GPA (for which the courses under consideration wouldn't count). In Ontario some schools for instance just use the OMSAS data which is verified and computerized followed by their algorithm (done by software).
thsc Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 oh i was under the impression that the schools receive your official transcripts? no? Even if they don't decide to look at your transcripts, you are required to enter these courses on their online system when you fill out their application because the withdrawn course still shows up on your transcript. Now if you still had 5.0 credits after dropping that course (e.g. you withdrew from a 6th course), then it would have less of a negative impact or not impact at all.

I would flat out stay it would have no impact at all

Actually no, you don't enter courses (in OMSAS at least) that are withdrawn without academic penalty. http://www.ouac.on.ca/faq/academic-record-withdrawn-course/ I was registered at U of O but withdrew from all my courses without penalty. I had to list U of O in my institutions, and send my transcript, but I had no courses entered for it and I spoke with ONSAS help about it and was told that's fine. I had to do something different for the system to accept an institution with no courses, but I was told this was correct by OMSAS directly.

I know it was a bit ago at this point but I never entered them for the same reason after talking with them. They just don't count.
AIsForApple Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 Many schools officially say they don't care about withdrawals, and some ask you not to even enter them. That said it's probably not the best thing to have on your transcript either.
