marauder4life
Hi everyone, These questions are on behalf of a friend who wants to apply to NYU dental this cycle. I will copy paste her questions here: 1. Does it look bad if I do not have any shadowing experience at a dental office? I do have a lot of other extracurricular activities, volunteer work and research projects. 2. NYU website states that they do rolling admissions starting in December, but then how come they interview people in September? I don't really understand this. Will I be at any sort of a disadvantage if I submit my application by early to mid November? Thank you!

skeith
I think I can help with answering these questions since I am currently an applicant applying to the states. If your friend wants more info regarding the admission process in the states, tell her to check out the student doctor network website. They have a ton of useful info. 1. Shadowing is absolutely necessary if you are planning to apply to the states. Different schools have different shadowing hour requirements although 100 hours seems to the safe amount. NYU recommends 100 hours. However, my friend who recently got accepted into NYU dental last year only had 60 hours. If your friend doesn't have any shadowing hours, you should recommend her to start shadowing ASAP in order to apply for next year. 2. All the american dental school can ONLY accept people after December 1st. However, they have been inviting people for interview for the past several months as the application cycle opened in June. Having said that, most american schools fill up about 70% of their class when December 1st hits. If you were to obtain an interview invite pre-december, it means that the school really wants you. When they say they do rolling admissions, it means that your application gets evaluated on a rolling basis. That basically means that the earlier you complete your application, the sooner you will get reviewed by the admissions committee and the sooner that you will get an interview invite. The later you apply, your chances of getting an interview invite diminishes greatly. You will be in a serious disadvantage if you submit your application in November since the school's admission process operate on a rolling basis. Once again, for more info, I would highly recommend you checking out the student doctor network website where they have TONS of info. Hope that helps
