GDhaliwal30
Im currently completing grade 12 and have a 90% average in my classes and was thinking of applying to UofC for health sciences. Does it really matter what program I get into or does it not matter at all? Im not really sure what the process is from first applying to uni, to taking the mcat, to getting accepted into med school and was wondering if someone could help walk me through the steps. Currently I volunteer at the hospital, volunteer at fundraisers, do charity work and volunteer at my local religious establishment. I took a glance at the accepted/waitlist thread on the top of the board and my ec seem to pale in comparison to theirs and was wondering what else could i do to make my portfolio look better? What kind of questions are on the mcat and how is it graded? In the thread i see people saying they go 8 or 10 or whatever but what does that mean? Im sorry if this all over the place but now you guys should be able to see whats it like in my head As i get any new questions ill be sure to post them here and i just want to thank you guys in advance for helping me out! bruhh
Welcome to premed101 I'm just going to share a couple of links to some very very helpful posts that have been either stickied or appreciated by premed users. To answer your question with regards to your respective program of undergraduate studies, NO, your program of study is almost never considered in your application especially for Canadian Med schools. U.S med schools may place minimal consideration on the program which is still not a significant factor. Do not, under any circumstance, go into a program thinking it would look good to the admission committee (e.g. I was in Biomedical Sciences first year of university because I thought that's the program that I needed to get into medical school, I switched out at the end of first year because I didn't actually like how the program was set up) links: How to be a successful applicant: http://forums.premed101.com/index.php?%2Ftopic%2F78787-how-to-be-a-successful-third-year-applicant%2F#entry897814 Leon's Guide to OMSAS http://forums.premed101.com/index.php?%2Ftopic%2F72350-leons-guide-to-omsas-2013%2F How to Destroy the MCAT (more valid for old MCAT obviously since no one has taken the new one yet) http://krnpremed.blogspot.ca/2012/02/how-to-destroy-mcat-with-minimal-study.html?m=1 Admission Requirements of Canadian Medical Schools https://www.afmc.ca/pdf/AdmissionRequirementsfor2015_en.pdf MCAT is going to be renewed very soon so don't even worry about it for now. an 8,9,10,11 will mean nothing after 2015 since the scoring will be completely renewed as well. Just know that you need to do good on the MCAT and your Verbal Reasoning score is usually a bit more important (for some schools at least).
