Honours Thesis Questions

Hi, I have a couple of questions about preparing for my honours thesis:

Do you need to have an idea/thesis ready when approaching a possible thesis supervisor? I'm really nervous about being able to come up with an adequate/original research thesis. Or do you figure that out together with your supervisor? When should you start asking profs to be your honours thesis supervisor? I plan on doing mine next year and am not sure if I need to have a supervisor by this spring, or before the fall term starts. Any advice would help, thanks:)

Undergrad thesis students (or even masters) rarely get to pick their own topics. Within all likelihood you'll be assigned a project to do, which believe me is a good thing, there are a million ways to screw up an experiment and you're better off stepping aside and letting the prof direct you because you might just spend a year getting no results. Don't worry too much about having your own ideas, just find a prof that does cool work and ask them if you can do your thesis in their lab.

Also I'd start asking people now for next fall.
