y255li
Hello, When you are applying for a gen surg at another school, is it a good idea to apply to work with a specific preceptor even if you don't know them? I'm wondering if contacting a preceptor prior to setting up electives and then working with them would increase your chances of getting a good reference letter. Or is it usually fine just applying to a program and getting the luck of the draw? If any residents could comment on any strategies they used to set up their gen surg electives, that'd be great! Thank you in advance!
chromeboker
To the best of my knowledge, this is possible at most programs.
sleeping_sickness
you can sometimes apply to work with a specific preceptor, however you may find that things have changed once you actually get there to start your electives (vacations/conferences and the like). you can often also apply to work on a specific service. that was what i did for all but 1 of my surgical electives.
