Uoft Interview Invites/regrets 2015

Time Stamp: Saturday Feb 21st at 9:24PM

Interview Date: March 8th

Result: Invite

wGPA: 3.92 (approx.)

MCAT: above cutoffs

ECs: Lots of research, club executive, community volunteering, sports, music. 

Research: No pubs, several labs

Essays: Did them pretty last minute but was happy with them nonetheless

Year Completed: MSc 

Geography: IP

Interview - March 7


Result- Invite


WGPA: 3.99


MCAT: 11/10/12


ECs: A bit lacking in some areas, part of a startup NGO, lots of sports, 2x NSERC, 1x2nd author pub, a bunch of conferences, a few other research related scholarships/activities, volunteering in labs, some music back in high school, random academic scholarships, and a cultural scholarship


Essays: I think I am a pretty good writer and I did put a lot of thought/effort into them...Didn't really have a great example for one of the questions but I guess it was sufficient :)

ECs: Happy to provide my CV and Essays in a PM!  
Essays: Spent a fantastic amount of time on them and felt really good! Really enjoyed the process of reflection they encouraged!

 

In short: multiple years as Refugee Committee Executive and Co-President, multiple executive/leadership positions (Chem Club, Science Student Association, Youth Science Canada, Relay for Life, Make a Wish), science outreach (Let's Talk Science; Volunteer of month; National Volunteer Award Shortlist), hospital volunteering (magic show presentations), soup kitchen, multiple research avenues (Canada Census, Roadside Survey, uOttawa NSERC, CGS-M, DAAD RISE, Canada Wide Science Fair Best in Fair), Princeton MCAT instructor, 1 publication (2 in preparation), column writer for local paper, varsity athlete and intramural captain (ultimate frisbee), aboriginal student mentor, cognitive therapy provider (mentally sensitive clients), news highlights and video for science outreach (CBC/CTV Ottawa, etc), campus counselor, carpentry/plumbing projects for charity, multiple academic/volunteering/extracurricular awards and so forth!

ECs: lots of work and volunteer experience, academic awards/leadership scholarships, publication and 3 other research projects.
Essays: Probably spent 2 months carefully writing and revising these.
Year: Masters

Result: Invite

wGPA: 3.87

MCAT: exceeds cutoffs

ECs: Tons! A lot of leadership, volunteering, and work experience. Some scholarships and awards. Years of music/performance experience and competition. About 3-4 years of research experience (including my current job).

Essays: To be honest I didn't spend a ton of time on them, but they were heartfelt and I really liked what I ended up submitting.

Year: Graduated undergrad

Geography : IP

 

Honestly I posted this mostly to give hope to those with sub-3.9 GPAs who aren't grad students. I also interviewed here two years ago with a 3.8 wGPA. It can be done!

ECs: NSERC, hospital volunteering through a student research program, long-term community volunteering, a lot of academic awards, etc. 
Essays: Spent a couple of weeks on them, getting different family members to review and critique. Tried to make each one meaningful and sincere. Was overall happy with the outcome.
Year: 3rd year UG
Geography: IP

 

Been looking at these boards for so many months. SO excited for the opportunity. I may or may not have shed a few tears of joy.

wGPA: 3.97 at time of application (didn't qualify for wGPA)
MCAT: PS 14 VR 13 BS 13

ECs: Participated in a few student-groups, tutoring high school students for the past year, no clinical experience, co-op research at UofT
Essays: Did them in a bit of a rush, felt happy with what I did in a limited amount of time, but would've preferred to work on them much more
Year: UG 4th year
Geography: IP

Pretty dissapointed, UofT was my preferred school, but hopefully one of my other five interviews pans out

MCAT: 13/13/13

ECs: Research (2 NSERCs, first author poster at neuroscience conference), exec on a few clubs, member of a few more clubs, 1yr hospital volunteering, 2y homework help volunteering, couple years exam review presentations, undergrad TA'ing, shadowed a surgery & an internal med shift, member of rock band in high school, 3yr guitar instruction, couple cashier jobs part time, couple scholarships.

Essays: Spent a month and a half, had them looked over a couple times, might not have had great examples but pretty confident in my writing abilities. Aimed for clusters. Might have misunderstood one question.

Year: final year UG

Geography: Ont, not Toronto

wGPA: 3.3 (from undergrad completed many, many years ago)...I guess these marks never go away.
MCAT: 11/10/12
ECs: Quite a bit...hospital volunteering, student clubs, teach at a college part-time, lots of work experience, presented at numerous international conferences, publications, volunteering in the community, etc.
Essays: Spent time on them, but just couldn't get them to click.  Figured they still got my message across.
Year: MSc completed, working full-time in research the last few years.
Geography: IP

 

I guess this old fogie has got to figure out what's next.

cGPA: 3.5 (don't qualify for weighting)

MCAT: 11/10/12 (2014), 14/08/12 (2013), 11/06/10 (2012)

ECs: hospital volunteering, physio clinic volunteering, research heavy, marathon runner, teaching assistant, bunch of scholarships but nothing big, served on several committees during my masters, worked throughout undergrad, currently working in a lab

Essays: Felt good. Who knows.

Year: MSc complete

Geography: IP
