entangledphoton
Hi everyone, I was wondering if people could comment on the degree of autonomy offered to IM residents at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary. I did an elective at the U of A, and my staff gave me and the PGY1 I was working with no autonomy at all. Is that the norm or an exception? LostLamb
Probably preceptor dependent...as an offservice pgy1 at one of those schools I found I had a lot of autonomy on my medicine rotation. I observed the IM residents given as much or more than I did. From what I hear from my pgy1 colleagues at the other school in IM, they have a significant amount of autonomy. Intly
What about at other institutions like Toronto, McGill or Ottawa? Do they compare or does the volume of senior residents/fellows kind of prevent pgy1s from assuming direct responsibility/making decisions for patients?
