Potential Carms Switch?

Recommended Posts

Talk to the program you want to switch into's PD.  You cant generally switch until after the first year (programs wont accept mid year and there is an official rule that you cant in the first 6 months), so for family depending on your situation you may be better just finishing the 2 years.

Thanks for your quick response.

I switched programs from FM to pediatrics. The PGME office sends out an email soliciting transfer requests in January of your PGY1 and most transfers occur after the first year is completed. People who match in the first round can transfer after 6 months and those who match in the second round after a year. You can also apply to the CaRMs second round match as a resident which I did and they (PD) recommend. I would recommend transferring after first year in a two year program as if you wait till you have completed a residency program it no longer becomes a transfer but retraining and is more difficult.
