Conferences, Presentations, And More?

So... I've been reading a couple of forums and it seems that quite a bit of the people here have attended conferences/presentations for the labs they've worked in. My question is: how does that work? Do we just ask to attend the conferences or is that something the PI or lab coordinator asks you first?

FYI: I got a research assistant position in a lab and everyone seems to be attending events, conferences and seminars every week or so. Just curious. :)

Usually at a conference you present your own research. If you just joined a lab, I would wait until you have some results and then ask your PI if you can attend any relevant upcoming conferences.

Also ask your lab mates what the norm is for your research group. Some profs tend to send more/less people to conferences than others.

PS nice username
