Dentistry Program In Canada Worth It Anymore?

I think it's worth it if you're flexible with where you want to work.. and I don't just mean within Canada. With that said, there seems to be an oversupply of almost everything nowadays.  My sister is an RN, and was unemployed for over a year following graduation in Toronto.  She found a job in a remote community in Manitoba.  That might have been a drastic move, but it was better than staying in Toronto.

Absolutely worth it!!!!!!

It's a fantastic profession!!!!

Rewarding interaction with patients.

Plenty of time to maintain active private life.

Huge income potential with NO government intervention (ie: private insurance vs OHIP in Ontario).

If you're good at what you do it won't matter how many dentists there are. I've been in practice for many years and my practice continues to grow despite the fact that at least 10 new offices have opened up within 1 km of my location.

I could go on and on but I think you get my point.

WOW, 10 offices have opened up within 1 km . see it show how saturate the market is.  you are doing well, but what is happening to the other 10 offices? No wonder the new grads are hit the worst and the dentists in the college do not care what new grads are suffering. Because they have been in practice for many years and seize the moment when dentists only need to focus on being good at dentistry.

Ok, but there is no way to know if you will be good.

And if you make the argument that a very talented person will be very successful in dentistry... well, they would probably be equally as successful in another profession... If that profession was an easier once, that talented person, I would think, would be relatively more successful in this new profession, as compared to dentistry... So I think it is worth comparing professions. Not everyone can be successful, unfortunately.

The cream of the crop always rises

That's applicable in applications but also in the real world, though in the real world it's a lot less about your grades and who you are on paper  :)

One again... not everyone can be the cream of the crop, even if every individual thinks they are... that is just not enough...

But that's exactly what I mean Contach.

The cream of the crop rises, in any industry. Just because you hold an MD or a DMD doesn't automatically mean you're going to be making bank. All it means is you have an opportunity to do something that is exclusive to those who hold the same degree you do. That, in and of itself, makes being successful in these professions much easier than in many other professions.

But hey, what do I know, I'm still a student :)

I understand that but, I would caution the OP from not going into dentistry because he/she perceives an oversupply,  No guarantees for sure but the potential to do very well is real. No one ever gets anywhere if they quit before they even try.

If you paid attention to the media lately, it's not just dentists that people say is saturated but medicine as well.

I can't remember when but I saw that the ontario government is cutting back 150 residency spots for medicine

and i've seen articles where it states that doctors/specialist have trouble finding jobs......

Jobs are tough to find in dense cities but if you go further out of town there is tons of opportunity. Lots of communities are desperate for physicians, dentists, etc. the people who think that no/ limited opportunity exists are being narrow minded and inflexible about where they'd like to work.

It is not true any more. Even in small town , dentists start to have difficulty now. Being flexible and open mind, going out of province is next step. more open mind, leaving the dentistry is next step. a small mouth anyway. LOL

Just because a few people on this forum is complaining about dentists not finding jobs in big cities or areas immediately surrounding big cities doesn't mean the profession is dead. If you look at the history of teaching, pharmacy, even medicine now is saturated in big cities i don't think you would be complaining about dentistry.

Saturation is in large city, saturation begins even in small town , it is a fact you can see, not because of complaining on the forum.

the profession is dying because of many unethical things happend because of oversaturation. the college won't do anything except get money from disciplining the dentist.

Other profession is saturated, It dose not mean dentistry should be saturated too,  it is a excuse  to justify what the college has done, even it is nonsense.

We are complaining because we used to believe in dentistry, we put our great amount of effort, great amount of tuition, and great amount of time to it,  if we are not protecting our profession, who will!!

I think the reason why the college is allowing more FTDs to practice is to deal with the aging population. In the next 20-30 years there will be more need for dentists and if they don't do something about it now it could be that there aren't enough dentists.

Sure we're feeling the saturation at the moment but that doesn't mean no profession out there is not saturated. If you're gonna put it that way

Medicine is....dentistry is.....pharmacy is......Physio, OT, everything is saturated. If you're complaining so much go find a job that isn't saturated.......

Look at real estate...accounting....EVERYTHING is...

Really?

It is still laughable logic. Dentistry need to be saturated, because every other professions are saturated, as you do not have a choice. if you don't like we are ruiining the profession to benefiti those higher rank in dentistry chain, leave the profession, or revoke your license.

suggestion to you, block my ID,super moderator, it is logic thing from what you mean in dentistry.

On what basis is that laughable?

To provide evidence to my point look at the population pyramid of Canada by the year 2045/2050 compare it to 2015

http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/canada-population-pyramid

You will see that the population of Canada is aging meaning more health care services are going to be needed i.e medicine, dentistry, and all the supporting health care professionals.

"Dentistry need to be saturated, because every other professions are saturated, as you do not have a choice. if you don't like we are ruiining the profession to benefiti those higher rank in dentistry chain, leave the profession, or revoke your license"

I hope you understand what you are saying because I certainly don't.......I'm having trouble understanding exactly your point in that statement

Obviously jeffbur's english isn't perfect, but no point in discrediting him for that.

Personally cookie, the argument of how we're going to be needing more dentists later on isn't really justified. Firstly, we have MORE than enough dentists now with the saturation to be able to deal with the aging population of the future. The examining boards don't plan on stopping this increase in accreditation of international dentists.

Point is, we're already oversaturated. At this point, an aging populating might bring us back to saturated. No need for more. Feel me?

However, since we aren't paid for by the government, the gov has no need to stop our credentialing. In their eyes, more dentists = oversaturation = fee books go down = more access to care = good. Ha, right. As though oversaturation doesn't provoke unethical actions that compromise the patients.

There's always the option of going to the US to practice if you feel Canada is over saturated. I'm sure you'll find the same issues there as well.

Haha, I never said the US is better.

All I said is that the argument of Canada becoming less saturated because of population changes doesn't hold up

well......who knows...maybe it won't be less saturated maybe it will. Only time will tell

But that's like saying : well.... who knows...maybe dentistry and all of medicine will be robot controlled. Only time will tell

Unlikely (for now), but sure, who knows, right?

The RCDSO feels that it's not its job to regulate the market but to give credentials to those who have passed a level of competence. A growing aging population is not the reason for increasing licenses handed out to FTDs.

The fact that other professions have saturated markets does not mean dentistry isn't more or less saturated. Nor does it mean that there isn't a very real problem. Those who think that isn't the case are already established many years ago and can't see what is happening out there.

FYI on that note, pay very careful attention to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) discussion:  http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/more-foreign-workers-tpp-1.3338189

"Sweetman also said labour market provisions will affect some people positively, others negatively. For example, an influx of dentists and pharmacists could harm people working in those fields, but help consumers.

"There will be winners and losers — it depends on where you sit," he said. "If I was a pharmacist or a dentist I would be really worried about it.… If I was a consumer of dental services I would probably be quite happy, because prices are going to go down.""
