New Written Component, A 30 Min Section That's Part Of The Interview?

Recommended Posts

You know, I'm not sure.  I remember the prompt being something very odd (a topic that I had very little interest in), where you had to incorporate a series of quotations into an argumentative essay on a subject completely unrelated to medicine.

The whole thing felt very odd and I do think that perhaps they were looking for people who somehow think differently from me?  I can be a bit concrete sometimes and a lot of it was very abstract.

It was quite perplexing to me - I was IP for Alberta and I didn't get in at either school, and I ended up getting in to multiple schools in Ontario where my odds should have theoretically been less.

I just remember being given a piece of art to look at, and asked about what I saw, and giving some answer, and then looking up the painting later and realizing I'd totally missed the point (this is also one of their sample MMI questions from their website, so not giving away any secrets).

that is an interesting thing to do at a psychiatry interview. Do you think they actually wanted you to get the point or simply articulate what you saw?

I agree.  Despite the high verbal reasoning requirements for my class (well, at least for the Non_Swomen) - still surprised how many people in my class sometimes seem functionally illiterate.  AT least for being in a professional program.  Glad they are bringing in a writing component.

For what it's worth, I'm also in this class and don't really find anyone to be "functionally illiterate." However, perhaps there should be a component of the interview that discourages one from publicly trashing their peers? Just a thought.

ha :) plus I should say that in the past these sorts of 30 min essays etc didn't really seem to help very much in terms of specifically language skills (the topic cannot be something that requires deep thought due to time constraints for instance).

There is also always the problem of coming up with either different topics or making sure somehow they cannot leak out etc as the interview is of course over multiple days.

So does anyone know if the written component will be actually hand-written or typed out? If they want it hand-written I feel terrible for whoever has to sort through them and decipher the chicken-scratch I'm sure most of us will be scrawling out....

It's typed. In the email it said we'll be escorted to a computer lab.

you know that is reassuring - only because that is the sort of system we would typically create something on, i.e. most of us are doing most of our writing online so how we approach writing about a topic is based on that.

Still probably a good idea to map everything out mental at the beginning even if you can move things around etc :)
