What are my chances? 3.54 GPA, 4th year app, 36R, good ec's

I would firstly like to say that this board is fantastic and is very helpful.

Secondly I would like to apologize for posting another one of these threads as I realize there are a million of them on this board. I just would really like to know my chances...although I guess the main goal of this thread is to basically find someone who has been or who might know someone who has had success with my stats.

So here it goes:

Pursuing undergrad degree in a life science specialist at University of Toronto, just finished my third year. Ontario resident.

OMSAS GPA: 3.54

MCAT - going to write it in August, looking at 36R from practice tests

However, I have one year above 3.8 so I hear that I may get an interview with Western. How often is it that individuals with one solid year get an interview?

Also my weighted GPA for UofT is 3.71. Just observing the stats of those who got admitted, it doesn't look very promising in this area.

Mcmaster I can apply but I doubt anything will come of it.

Queens, NOMS and Ottawa are all out of the question as I do not make any of their cutoffs.

So now I'm considering OOP applications.

Any OOP applicants get even considered with my GPA for UBC?

How about Calgary? I know that I may be able to make their algorithm as my best two sections on the MCAT are VR and BS and my best two year GPA is 3.67 but they state that the whole academic record is looked at after this. What are my chances at this school?

Alberta is out of the questions since I don't even make their cutoffs.

Saskatchewan - 87% average, once again, not making their recommended cutoff.

Manitoba - seems like I have a solid chance as long as they don't raise the AGPA above 3.96 (my AGAP is 3.96).

Also I know very little information about OOP procedures in memorial and Dalhousie and would appreciate someone filling me in.

I have lots of research experience, volunteer at hosptial and center for autistic children, student poster presentations, college mentors and other employment such as science teaching for kids etc.

Can someone shine some light on my situation. Even answering one of my many questions would be appreciated.

Thank you for reading this long post, I really appreciate it.

I'll help with one Q: However, I have one year above 3.8 so I hear that I may get an interview with Western. How often is it that individuals with one solid year get an interview?

Provided the admission requirements don't change, you only need ONE year above cutoff for an interview. If you meet the GPA and MCAT cutoffs, you are guaranteed an interview. You need a second year above the GPA cutoff to gain admission, though... so if your marks are below the cutoff this year, even if you have an interview, you will NOT be eligible for admission.

For UBC...

From the other thread: "my gpa (oop) was a 3.49 at the time of application. that still fetched me a 21/25 for my academic score."

in that case you probably will score around 21 or 22. For OOP you need about 40~41/50 on the file review to get an intervie... that means you need a 18 to 20/25 on the EC... it's doable, but your ECs have to be above average for sure. If you're confident give it a shot. But as I said in another thread, your post-interview chances are much lower than the in-province applicants.

I was IP, so I didn't have much experience with Calgary's OOP calculation. It looks like the cutoff hovers somewhere around 450, but that could easily go up or down. With a 3.67, you're looking at needing at least a 12 on VR and an 11 on BS to be close. IMHO, anything could happen if you got an interview, but just from what I've heard about OOP competition your GPA might be a little on the low end for a 3rd year applicant. If you were 4th year and brought that cumulative GPA up to around 3.7 I'd say you'd have a great shot.

Good luck with the MCAT in a few weeks!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, don't let anything discourage you...if you do well enough on the MCAT to be around that OOP cutoff, definitely apply!

You have mentioned that you are a 3rd year applicant. In that case, Western requires all applicants to be completing a 4-year honours degree simply to get to the interview stage (in addition to the other req's)

Best of luck with the MCAT. Getting a 36R will open doors for you nearly everywhere.

i think people misunderstood his post. He wrote that he just completed 3rd year. Therefore he'll have the 4 year degree by the time he would enter med. Don't think he meant what you think he meant when he was sayin he's a third year applicant. Maybe i'm wrong though....

Hey everyone, thank you for your prompt replies.

I am actually going to be a 4th year applicant. The moderator had edited my original thread title which was originally ("Another what are my chances thread") ...

Anyone else have any comments to add? It would be greatly appreciated.

I guess the point of this thread was to grab that little glimpse of hope and so far the posts has provided that so thank you.

I fixed it. You can go back and edit your own posts/titles by clicking on the "edit" underneath your username to the left of the post.

Posts titled some variant of "What are my chances?" with no other information are not useful for anybody. It would be helpful if people would post with more descriptive thread titles.
