Driving To Uoft Campus

Recommended Posts

Have any current med students taken the approach of driving to UofT campus/assigned academy instead of moving nearby (I have a car - would be around a 1 hr drive for me in rush hour)? Rent prices near downtown campus are crazy and it would be cheaper for me to pay gas rather than live DT.

I did it as an undergradt at UofT, but noped out 3 days later.

Parking in my day was $100/mo on campus for students (this was 5 years ago). They have special slots for students in the campus lots, and although there is a waitlist, you usually get a parking pass if you apply.

Problem is the drive was absolutely exhausting. Driving in downtown during rush hour is very tiring. All the bicycles, pedestrians, no left-turns during rush hour, streetcars down Bathurst and College, ...etc, and you can see how quickly it turns into a nightmare. Plus, you don't really save much compared to public transit if alone. If you're carpooling, it would be nice in theory except it's hard to find another student who finishes at the same time as you and lives near you. One of you is always going to need to stay late for a course/group project/EC/volunteer and bam your time is wasted.

To each their own though. If you can make it work good luck!

As a somebody who has been working at a downtown TO hospital for the year, I would suggest living a bit north of downtown in walking distance of a subway station and taking the subway. Its cheaper/less stressful than driving and the rent is cheaper. For instance, I have heard of people living at Bathurst and St. Clair just to give you an idea...
