ljbaron
Just curious, Quick question, I switched degrees when I was in second year, this ultimately means that I will take 6 years to graduate with a 4 year program. I am just wondering about Schulich's "special year", would my best two years be my 5th and 6th year then? My CGPA is utter rubbish because I sh*t the bed in years 1 and 2. With many schools using the CGPA system, how can I improve my CGPA? Even if I did a second undergrad, the GPA from my first undergrad get combined with my second, therefore improving a 2.7 CGPA to anywhere near acceptable is impossible. Does anyone know which schools view second degrees as completely different? I also know Schulich treats a second degree the exact same as if you were to be doing your first degree, for example, 3 first year courses your first year, 3 second year courses second year, etc. Thoughts? Hi. Not really sure which schools view second degrees as completely different. However, I will say that if you can get your GPA at least into the 3.0-3.5 range, a really high MCAT score and solid ec's can (possibly) make up for it. You would also have a decent shot at US schools, I hear DO schools are a little less concerned with GPA. Good luck with everything.
pulsar93
IIRC Mcgill, Queens, Dal, Ottawa, and Western all have GPA policies that may work in your favour. Queens, Dal, and Western take 2 years of GPA, Ottawa looks at 3 years, and Mcgill looks at the 2nd degree GPA (if you decide to do another UG). I think NOSM took 2nd degree GPA as well but I remember reading somewhere that they've stopped doing so, but if you're rural it might be worth taking a look. What's your GPA look like in each year? Full course load each year? If you shit the bed in years 1 and 2 but had a strong GPA in the last 4 you should have a good shot at the above schools (with good MCAT and ECs of course), otherwise a second undergrad would probably be the best option. Edit: Forgot to mention Sask takes 2nd UG GPA but only for in-province applicants though.
