abovewoods
I have a research opportunity with the engineering department but it is not bio related.
CardiacArrhythmia
No, research isn't a "necessity" to get into medical school. Based on this notion, the answer to your question is no, it doesn't matter what discipline of research you do as it isn't a specific requirement for medical schools. rmorelan
I would agree - no. For starters there is a lot more to medicine than just biology (speaking as an computer scientist.....ha).
Birdy
They don't even care if your degree is biology related. If you've got the opportunity to do some research, go for it.
abovewoods
Thank you for your responses! I've been an undergrad RA in an engineering research lab for the past 2 years and I have the option of starting over and switching to a new lab that is focused more on medical research, but I wouldn't have as much input on projects and there would be more administrative tasks. Wasn't sure if I was putting myself at a disadvantage by continuing with the engineering lab.

freewheeler
Don't need to have any research at all. Follow your interests.
