My Dream Is To Become A Radiology Oncologist

Hello,

 

How hard is it to become a radiology oncologist in Canada, also I am probably going to start med school either next  year or the year after that.  I was wondering if there was anything I should know if I ever want to specialize in that field.  I am always an early bird so I would to have some info to put on my wall.

What got you interested in radiation oncology and how do you know absolutely that this is the field for you?

 

My advice is to first focus on getting accepted into medical school, and then spend a couple of months exploring other fields before settling all your eggs in one basket.

It's pretty easy currently. Not a terribly popular specialty as it's very small and there is not a lot of exposure to it. I would get accepted into medical school before worrying about it.

right now as far as fields to match too it isn't that hard. I would agree with BlueSpirit - get into medical school, and look around but if it helps you to be motivated right now again it is a field that if a medical student wants to currently that should be doable.

It is a research-heavy field. That's not to say research is required to match to radiation oncology, but if rad onc is ultimately your goal, getting involved in research is likely a good idea - it's often part of the job.

It;s not really a gunner specialty unless you are applying to the US for residency. About 1:1, probably less for ratio of applicants to spots
