Waterloo Chem

Hey guys,

So I'm in a bit of a dilemma right now. I planned on taking SOC 101 as one of my electives in the fall term, but because I haven't taken CHEM 123, which I need to take Organic Chemistry 1, I might have to take CHEM 123 online in the fall term. CHEM 123 is offered in the winter and the spring. I can't take it in the winter because I have co-op and if I take it in the spring then I won't be able to take organic chemistry until the fall term in fourth year. I don't want to take CHEM 123 online, but I also don't want to delay organic them until fourth year because I would like to write the MCAT in third year. What do you guys think?

Thanks

If you find coop in Toronto for the Winter term, you can look to do the second part of general chemistry in the evening on a letter of permission at the Ryerson's Chang School. Just confirm it with Waterloo for equivalency. That is one option you can consider if you get coop in Toronto.

Idk any universities that offer general chem II on campus in the Fall.

Doing chem 123 online is not a bad option during coop. Both chem 120 and 123 were fairly easy courses. Do you know where you are planning on being for coop in the winter? another option could be to find a placement in Waterloo and do chem 123 in class.

I plan on doing co-op in Toronto. Do you think taking it online would be a good idea then? But, don't med schools only count a full course load?

You need to maintain a full course load in your academic terms to be eligible for the uoft wgpa (other schools have different policies). But either way, if you take 2.5 credits during your school terms, you should be considered a full course load. I took online courses almost every co-op term for a psych minor and it worked out fine.

If you really want to do organic before your MCAT, then chem 123 online is a good option I think.

So if I take chem online during my co-op term it won't mess with the requirement to have a five course load? Also, did you go to Waterloo?

yes, I did go to Waterloo and did Co-op.

I am fairly certain that taking a course during your work-term has no impact on course load as long as you have a full schedule during the academic terms. You can email admissions to confirm this. I took online courses almost every co-op term and was able to get in.
