Asking a member of the community with little reference writing experience for a reference?

Should I go with an academic reference instead? Or would it be okay to give them resources on how they can approach writing a strong letter?

You could do that, or some appreciate it when you give them a draft of a letter that they can edit as they see fit.

If they'll give you a good reference, I would use them.
