BCG vaccine

Recommended Posts

lol got the two-step mantoux TST done these past few weeks.. comes back +ve bc of my BCG vaccine that I didn't know about until my mom told me after my test. Scared the hell outta me!

now I have to get my chest x-ray-ed...

Just an overall FYI for anyyone who is not Canadian-born to check your vaccination cards to see if you were given the BCG vaccine as part of the vaccination regime of a foreign country. Might create some complications like in my case.

Interesting...my fiance told me that med schools only check for Hepatitis, MMR and tetanus.  Perhaps the BCG is school dependent. I am sure I am BCG positive as well :( , how does that complicate things? Do you have to do an additional chest X-ray?

definitely required at Ottawa - although that is the school I have found to be the most picky about all that stuff.

UBC checks for TB and varicella in addition.

The problem is though that you can't really do anything about it, since just getting the BCG doesn't exempt you from the two step test.

If it was 10-15mm = most likely BCG vaccine is the cause

15mm + = harder to tell but I would lean towards BCG causing it if no hx of risk factors

The mantoux simply has too many false positives and guidelines don't expect reflect that either.

Just get the Quantiferon test and you'll have a real result.
